Saffran stated: That our campaign has raised nearly three times as much as any of our opponents in the last three months shows the incredible momentum that this campaign has picked up in only a short time, and is a testament to what the people of Northeast Queens want in an elected official: an independent, reform-minded leader who is not beholden to any lobbyists or special interests.

Saffran entered the race in April after the arrest of Councilman Dan Halloran. Although his leading opponents have more money in total, they have been campaigning and fundraising for over a year in anticipation of running against Halloran. In barely three months, Saffran has already raised almost as much money as it took his leading opponents over a year to raise. Moreover, the Democrats will be spending their war chests on the September 10 primary, leaving Saffran with a clear advantage going into the November general election race.
