Press / News Media David McLaughlin, Interim Superintendent Statement From Hesperia Unified School District March 18, 2013
Today, the Hesperia Unified School District was contacted by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) with allegations that discriminatory behaviors, specifically toward gays and lesbians, take place at Sultana High School. These allegations are deeply concerning and they have my full and focused attention. At this time, I am returning to the District from spring break to personally oversee a thorough examination of this situation. While the ACLU letter focuses specifically on the rights of gay and lesbian students, I see it as a moral imperative to reinforce the current efforts in place regarding anti-bullying and tolerance throughout the District. Please be assured that as the District and its lawyers examine the specifics of the ACLU letter, I will personally oversee the review of all policies and practices that strive to ensure that all staff and students can attend school in a safe, welcoming and nurturing environment. I cannot offer comment on the specifics in the letter, as I just received it and have, as yet, not had opportunity to thoroughly review. I can, however, offer this comment and commitment on the broad themes of tolerance and compassion: these are essential ingredients in an education that prepares students for success in our diverse world, and I intend to ensure that these themes are fully integrated throughout our programs and services for students.
