Gas Laws Fantastic Challenge Problems!

Complete the gas laws problems below. Show all your work, label all variables and check sig figs and units in your answer. 1. A 5.0-L flask contains 0.60 g O2 at a temperature of 22oC. What is the pressure (in atm) inside the flask?

2. What volume is occupied by 2.0 g of He at 25oC and a pressure of 775 mm Hg?

3. A compressed gas cylinder, at 13.7 MPa and 23oC, is in a room where a fire raises the temperature to 450. oC. What is the new pressure in the cylinder?

4. An ideal gas is contained in a cylinder with a volume of 5.0 x 10 2 mL at a temperature of 30.oC and a pressure of 710. torr. The gas is then compressed to a volume of 25 mL, and the temperature is raised to 820. oC. What is the new pressure of the gas?

5. What mass of helium is required to fill a 1.5-L balloon at STP?

6. Calculate the volume of O2, at STP, required for the complete combustion of 125 g octane (C8H18) to CO2 and H2O.

7. Consider the reaction between 50.0 mL of liquid methyl alcohol, CH 3OH (density = 0.850 g/mL), and 22.8 L of O2 at 27oC and a pressure of 2.00 atm. The products of the reaction are CO 2(g) and H2O(g). Calcuilate the number of moles of H2O formed if the reaction goes to completion.

8. A gas consisting of only carbon and hydrogen has an empirical formula of CH 2. The gas has a density of 1.65 g/L at 27oC and 734 torr. Determine the molar mass and molecular formula of the gas.

9. Calculate the density of ammonia gas at 27oC and 635 torr.
