Answer all questions. Question 1 The inertial properties of a three-stage rocket are shown in Figure Q1. Note that k i is the radius of gyration of the ith stage about the axis that is parallel to the x-axis (at O out of the paper) and passes through the centre of gravity Gi of the stage. Find z and I x of the rocket [6].
Figure Q1. Question 2 Determine the moments of inertia about the x- and y- axes for the region shown with density and thickness t (Figure Q2) [10].
Figure Q2.
Question 3 The angle bracket is made from aluminium plate with a mass of 0.4077 kg (Figure Q3). For this analysis the plate must be subdivided into three masses, the vertical section (210 mm x 100 mm) with mass 0.282 kg; the circle (diameter 70 mm) with (negative) mass -0.0518 kg and the horizontal section (120 mm x 110 mm) with mass 0.1775 kg. The thickness of the plate is negligible compared to the other dimensions. Calculate I xx , I yy , I zz for the composite body [Hint: Use Steiners theorem where applicable with perpendicular distances to axes] [10].
Figure Q3. Question 4 The combined mass centre of the back-pulling motorcycle and the cyclist is located at G (Figure Q4). (a) Find the minimum acceleration for which the cyclist can perform a wheelie, i.e. raise the front wheel off the ground. What minimum coefficient of static friction between the tyres and the road is required for the wheelie? [2 +1] (b) Find the minimum deceleration (braking) for which the cyclist can topple over in front of the motorcycle [2].
