iv MODELING AND PROCESS CONTROL FOR CONTINUOUS STIRRED TANK REACTOR (CSTR) IN SERIES

ABSTRACT

Study on the modeling and process control for continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) has been carried out with the isomerization of n-pentane as a case study. The equipment and pipeline design has included. Modeling equation on the CSTR process has been developed using the mass and energy balance equation and three final numbers degree of freedom has been obtained. Hence, three feedbacks controllers are installed for the controlling the temperature, liquid level, and composition of npentane in the CSTR. For the open loop stability test, it is shown that both of the reactant concentration and temperature is self-regulating, which means that both of this variables can reach a steady state. But, for the level, it is not self-regulating as the level of the liquid increases with time. For the stability test on the feedback closed loop, all of the controlled variables response is in oscillating manner but eventually reach steady state for the step change in set points. After using the auto-tuning, all of the control variables reach steady state with reducing the oscillation and time.
