INTRODUCTION

CHAPTER I: ORIGINS OF THE WAR

The main event which started the conflict between England and France was when William, the Duke of Normandy, conquered England in 1066. Williams descendants in England claimed for French lands, which in that moment were owned by King Henry II, which inherited the County of Anjou from his father and controlled its Dukedom through his wife. Then power of French kings started to rise, and thats why English vassals started armed conflicts to claim their lands and stop their tyranny. In year 1204, King John was ruling England. He was ruling the Country of Anjou and other lands around it. In order to recover his territories, his son was forced to sign the Treaty of Paris, which indicated him to be considered a vassal of France, so hell receive his territories back including Aquitaine. It was an important point why the war started; the king of England was forced to be humiliated in order to get its territories, this created resentment by the English side, adding the previous territory fights and tyranny of French kings. It was a great impulse to start the war. This bowing of kings leaded wars between years 1294 an 1324. Event which happened when Aquitaine was taken by France and English crown got it back. Aquitaine was a key region, because it gave profits, it was an aim for all the kings. Claiming one productive area was also one of the causes why this war began.
