SMART FOOD
S BUSIN E SS school students in Seattle in 2011, Carrie Ferrence, 35, and Jacqueline Gjurgevich, 34, tackled the problem of food deserts, areas lacking decent grocery stores and fresh, affordable eats. Their brainchild: Stockbox Neighborhood Grocery, which brings low-cost mini markets with quality, budget-friendly produce (much of it local) and food staples to areas in need. The first store opened that year inside a 20-foot shipping container in a mixed-income Seattle neighborhood. It was like a food truck, but we took the wheels off to make it more reliable, Ferrence says. Last year, Stockbox moved into a 550-foot space, serving residents who once had to travel miles to grocery shop. The duo will open a second Seattle store this summer and hope to go national within five years. This isnt just about food, Ferrence says. Its about bringing people together. Melissa Bykofsky
