The PSEi reached new highs twice in October before ending the month at 5,424.51 points, higher by 1.5% or 78.41 points from the previous months close. The benchmark index hit a fresh record of 5,443.74 on 04 October 2012 on the back of a benign inflation outlook and robust corporate earnings. As of end-October, the PSEi was up by 24.1% or 1,052.55 points from the 2011 closing level. Five of the six sector indices advanced during the month, led by the industrial index which rose by 4.9% month-on-month. The holding firms, property, mining and financials indices followed with 3.0%, 1.6%, 0.4 and 0.3%, respectively. The services index, on the other hand, declined by 2.5% month-on-month. The broader all-share index meanwhile added 0.9% or 30.94 points to finish at 3,580.59 points. Total value turnover in October reached P165.60 billion, a 51.5% increase from the P109.28 billion total value turnover posted a year ago. The average daily value turnover for the month amounted to P7.53 billion, 37.8% more than the P5.46 billion a year ago. For the 10-month period, the total value of trades rose by 27.5% to P1.47 trillion, from P1.16 trillion in the same period last year, while the average daily value turnover went up by 28.7% to P7.12 billion, from P5.53 billion in the same period last year. Foreign investors were net sellers in October amounting to P8.85 billion, a reversal of the P5.17 billion net foreign buying posted in the previous month and of the P898.40 million net foreign buying in October last year. Foreign trades accounted for 47.6% of market activity during the month. As of end-October, foreign transactions netted a buy of P86.36 billion, more than five times the P16.51 billion net foreign buying recorded in January to October 2011. Consolidated net income of listed companies in the first half grew by 26.4% to P271.02 billion from P214.40 billion in the same period last year. Five out of the six sectors recorded positive net income growth, led by the industrial sector whose member companies saw net income surge by 62.9% to P85.21 billion from P52.31 billion year-on-year. The mining and oil sectors aggregate net income meanwhile fell by 28.3% to P11.22 billion from P15.65 billion. Meanwhile consolidated revenues of listed companies in the first half also rose by 21.1% to P2.24 trillion from P1.85 trillion in the same period last year. The Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) welcomed two new companies in October, namely, Yehey! Corporation (YEHEY), which listed by way of introduction (LBWI) on 18 October 2012, and Coal Asia Holdings Incorporated (COAL), which listed via initial public offering on 23 October 2012. The share price of YEHEY doubled to end the month at P2.00 from its initial listing price of P1 per share, while COAL shares added 35 centavos to close at P1.35 from its offer price of P1 per share. As of endOctober, the PSE has 256 listed companies.
