Chapter I Introduction A. Background of the Study Centella asiatica, also known as Gotu Kola is a member of the parsley family. It has fan-shaped leaves which bear a small oval fruit. It does not have taste or smell and lives in wet areas. The leaves and stems are the parts used to produce medicine. The Gotu Kola, a plant commonly found in India, China, and Indonesia, is long known for its medicinal properties. It has been used for centuries to treat skin disorders such as leprosy and psoriasis. It was also used to treat stomach ulcer, boost mental capabilities, and reduce fever. In todays field of medicine, Gotu Kola has found its way to the market as an herbal supplement to boost memory and treat depression. Currently, it is sold in a market as dried herbs, teas, capsules, tablets, tinctures, and ointments. The amount of Gotu Kola intake depends on the severity of illness. Too much intake may cause headache, skin allergy, nausea, burning sensation, upset stomach, dizziness, and drowsiness. B. Statement of the problem - General Objectives
