    Faulconer urging approval to begin rebuilding police department and improve public safety
    What: Councilmember Kevin L. Faulconer is asking the City Council to approve a plan to rebuild San Diegos shrinking police department after years of attrition. On Wednesday the Council will consider a program that allocates $2 million towards increasing uniform and equipment allowances for sworn officers thereby reducing officers out of pocket expenses as well as recruitment activities such as career fairs, community events and recruitment promotional publications. In June, Faulconer and several of his council colleagues called for immediate action to demonstrate to police officers and the public that the City is committed to an effective and competitive police department that meets job market demands and has the resources to protect San Diego neighborhoods. This call to action led to the development of this plan. When: Wednesday, August 28, 2013 10:00 a.m. Councilmember Faulconer is available for interviews before and after the 10:00 a.m. City Council hearing. San Diego City Hall City Council chambers 12th floor 202 C Street San Diego, CA 92101 According to the Police Officers Association, the City has incurred millions of dollars in lost investment due to officers leaving the San Diego Police Department. SDPD staffing is down 300 officers from a decade ago and approximately half of its 1,800 person force will be eligible to retire in the next four years. This is particularly problematic in that the City of San Diego has one of the leaner police forces with fewer officers per capita than many big cities. ###
