Representing the Virgin

in the Venetian Ruled Crete
of the Fifteenth Century
Stavroula Koraki
From the fourteenth to the mid-seventeenth century, the island
of Crete has played a leading role in arts and letters and has become the native land of remarkable artists who were able to produce bilingual works, that is, to paint both in the Byzantine and
in the Western style. The image of the Virgin has always been a
most popular subject of their repertoire. Even today her representation conveys maternal love and creates strong bonds with
the believer who feels his relation with the Mother of God to be direct and full of compassion. The obligation of a painter to satisfy
the needs of his broader clientele has resulted to the creation of
various iconographic types of the Virgin, each investing the relation with the Virgin with a different meaning and symbolism. Thus,
the type of the Virgin Hodegetria suggests her guidance of the
believers, the Virgin of Tenderness denotes her affection and
human feelings for her Son and concurrently for all Christians,
the Virgin of Passion symbolizes the Divine Passion and its redeeming role, the Madre della Consolazione of the Byzantine in
style Western icons indicates the comfort and relief one can find
in the arms of the Mother of Christianity.
