    Amebic liver abscess is caused by the parasite Entamoeba histolytica and develops when the parasite spreads from the intestines to the liver. Risk factors include alcoholism, cancer, immunosuppression, malnutrition, older age, pregnancy, recent travel to tropical regions, and steroid use. Symptoms can include abdominal pain localized to the upper right side, chills, diarrhea, fever, jaundice, joint pain, loss of appetite, sweating, and weight loss. The abscess forms as the parasite secretes enzymes that destroy liver tissue, forming a well-demarcated lesion containing necrotic debris that varies in size but is often located in the posterior superior aspect of the right liver lobe
