"Summer laid her simple Hat" By Emily Dickinson [Analysis]

Summer laid her simple Hat [1] On its boundless Shelf [2] Unobserved a Ribbon slipt, [3] Snatch it for yourself. [4] Summer laid her supple Glove [5] In its sylvan Drawer [6] Wheresoe'er, or was she [7] The demand of Awe? [8]
Poem 1363 [F1411] "Summer laid her simple Hat" Analysis by David Preest [Poem]

The second stanza of this poem ends a letter (L477) to Thomas Higginson of late October 1876. Now that summer has taken off her hat and gloves at the end of her journey, all we can do is 'snatch' a fallen ribbon as a souvenir, and ask, 'Did that summer really happen, which demanded of us our Awe?'
