SKILL

PERIPHERAL INTRAVENOUS CANNULATION

LEARNING OUTCOME

In combination with supervised accredited practice the successful student should be able to place an iv cannula in a peripheral vein-whilst demonstrating a safe technique and minimizing the risk of needle stick injury to yourself or others.

INDICATIONS

Administration of iv fluids. Administration of iv therapy (antibiotics, anesthesia, sedation, pain killers. Administration of iv blood products.

Cannulas :

Cannula selection Smallest gauge - shortest length

Veins of the forearm

Veins of forearm

venepuncture

Apparatus

Gloves Range of iv cannulas Dressing to secure cannula. Cotton wool balls Alcohol wipes Sharps bin Syringe 5 ml Saline for flushing

Procedure

Introduction & consent from pt. Apply tourniquet Select the site. Locate a suitable vein Feel for a firm & bouncy vein. Open tourniquet Wash hands & wear gloves. Apply touniquet again

Avoid

Dominant Arm Infected,bruised or thrombosed veins. If any ly.node dissection avoid that limb. Previously pricked or used arm Site of AV Fistula

Tethering Skin

Insertion of cannula

Insert at 30degrees inclination, giving a bold prick in the vein with one assertive movement, when flashback occurs decrease angle and advance cannula with stylet.

ADVANCE CANNULA

Advance cannula in vein while simultaneously with drawing the needle.

Release tourniquet

Procedure-contd.

Remove needle. Apply pressure at the proximal location of cannula to prevent blood gush (leak) Dispose sharp.

Apply cap on drip . secure with sticking


Secure the cannula

Flushing

Cleanse the injection port with alcohol wipes. flush
