PART II:STATICS
CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
Mechanics - physical science which deals with the effects of forces on objects mechanics of rigid bodies, mechanics of deformable bodies, mechanics of fluids. Statics equilibrium of static bodies. Dynamics deals with motion of bodies
Basic concepts
Space - geometric region occupied by bodies whose positions are described by linear and angular measurements relative to a coordinate system. E.g 2D, 3D Time - measure of the succession of events. Mass -measure of the inertia of a body, (its resistance to a change of velocity). - quantity of matter in a body.
Basic concepts
Force - action of one body on another. Force tends to move a body in the direction of its action. (characterised by magnitude, direction, point of application). Particle - is a body of negligible dimensions Rigid body - change in distance between any two of its points is negligible for the purpose at hand.
Scalars.- posses only magnitude (e.g time, volume, density, speed, energy) Vectors - possess direction as well as magnitude (e.g displacement, velocity, acceleration, force, moment, and momentum). - Free vector- action not constrained -Sliding vector-constrained to a line of action - Fixed vector-unique point of action.
