5.1 Qué buena celebracién!
My purpose in designing this lesson was to have students actually EXPLORE the city
that we were talking about, Barcelona. | wanted to focus a lot more on culture and
get them more involved in their own learning processes by having them explore the
things that they found interesting and by asking them to create a “trip” to Barcelona
for a celebrity that they would present to the class. This activity not only tied in all
of the important vocabulary from the section but it also added an element of
adventure and excitement. I was really impressed with some of the things my
students came up with!
Week 1
Introduction of new vocabulary using a PowerPoint presentation and TPRS
Video tour of Senorita Burhop’s house (similar to the TV show “Cribs”)
‘Students write suggestions of chores that need to be done in Senorita’s house
Students design ideal homes in small groups (each student designs a
different level of the home
Introduce art and architecture in Barcelona
Video about the life of Antoni Gaudi
Important vocabulary and grammar: rooms of the home, chores, present
progressive review, the verb deber
Week 2
Large numbers are introduced u:
Right game.
Students read short passage about the city of Barcelona and answer
comprehension questions
Unit project explained and students are given work time in the computer lab
for the PowerPoints
Students are also given time to work on essays that support their
PowerPoints
PowerPoints are presented to the class
Review for unit test
Important vocabulary: food, large numbers, rooms of the house
