ESI Alumni Mentor Job Description

Program Overview
The Expanded Success Initiative (ESI) at New Design High School will operate under the following goals:

To facilitate peer mentoring as a strategy to promote education success To provide life skills that will enable students to maintain achievement levels through and beyond high
school To support classroom teachers in creating and delivering curriculum to students in a culturally responsive manner To introduce students to college preparedness and career readiness To introduce students to resources and experiences that will create learning opportunities outside of school and allow students to make real world connections and applications To celebrate cultural diversity

With the support of the ESI Coordinator, Mentors, Social Work Intern and Literacy Specialist, program goals will be achieved through peer mentoring, home visits and frequent check-ins with family members, individual and group meetings, after-school and extra-curricular activities and excursions, and Saturday programming.

Role Overview
Four to six ESI Alumni Mentors will be hired to join the ESI Team at New Design High School. The central role of the ESI Alumni Mentor is to provide community, support engagement and other interventions to 9th and 10th grade male students at NDHS to help them realize their personal and academic goals toward graduation. The ideal candidate is able to successfully engage with young people, be a positive role model and leader, work independently and within a team of adults in a school-setting, and is organized and reliable. The ESI Alumni Mentors will report directly to the ESI Coordinator.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities


All ESI Alumni Mentors must participate in a training and weekly supervision with the ESI Coordinator. In addition, ESI Alumni Mentors will participate in ongoing team meetings with ESI Staff (both inside and outside of the school) to discuss student progress and program goals. ESI Alumni Mentors will be responsible for the individual and group support of ESI students in the following key program areas:

One-on-One Check-Ins and ESI Staff Meetings Check-in with assigned students on a regular basis to discuss grades, attendance graduation requirements and set achievable academic goals. Assist with the implementation of interventions, such as attendance contracts, goal sheets, tutoring schedules and academic plans to help students succeed academically. Attend meetings and home visits with students, school staff and/or families as needed. Regularly track student academic and attendance progress on Jupitergrades.com, with presence in the school hallways and classes, and with the Attendance Dean and school data team. Document all intervention work on the CIC form and ESI Google Doc data spreadsheets. Assist in classes with students and teachers as needed. Assist in parent-teacher conferences, student open house and ESI-related school events Attend 1 ESI Network event (outside of school) per semester. Group Facilitation & Student Engagement Facilitate student lunch groups as scheduled. Responsible for setting up space, ordering food, and helping to clean up rooms before and after group sessions, meetings and events. Plan topics and activities themed around life skills, academic success, and issues relevant to the students lives for meetings, including Gents meetings. Ensure student awareness of and attendance to group meetings, activities, and events through reminders (texts, classroom announcements, emails and in person). Assist in organizing trips, celebratory events and activities for ESI students.

Requirements & Compensation

Ability to commit to working 8-9 hours per week over 2-3 days (4 hrs each day for 2 days or 3 hours each day for 3 days) Ability to work from September 2013 - June 2014 Email 1-2 paragraphs to Nicole Smith at nicolesmith@newdesignhigh.com explaining why you would be good for this position and what you would hope to accomplish in your role. This is due by September 16, 2013. Compensation: $600 for the school year, to be paid in two $300 checks at the end of both the Fall and the Spring semesters.
