Generic Name: Clonidine Hydrochloride Centrally acting sympatholitic Brand Name: Catapres

Drug Class: T- Antihypertensive P-

Mechanism of Action: Stimulates alpha-adrenergic receptors in CNS, decreasing sympathetic outflow, inhibiting vasoconstriction & ultimately reducing blood pressure. Prevents transmission of pain impulses by inhibiting pain pathway signals in brain Indication: Mild to moderate hypertension Contraindication: Hypersensitivity to drug, Hypersensitivity to component of adhesive layer (transdermal form), Infection at epidural injection site, bleeding problems (epidural use), Concurrent anticoagulant therapy Dosage: 25 mg 2 tab every now and then every 6 hours Adverse Effects: CNS drowsiness, depression, dizziness, nervousness, nightmares CV hypotension (w/ epidural use), palpitations, bradycardia GI - nausea, vomiting, constipation, dry mouth METABOLIC Na retention SKIN - Rash, sweating, pruritus, dermatitis OTHER weight gain, withdrawal phenomenon Why patient needs med: Patient complains of dizziness with high blood pressure Nursing Interventions: Monitor Px for s/s of adverse cardiovascular reactions Frequently assess v/s especially BP
