The video I will be analysing is Eminems song When Im Gone.

The reason for choosing Eminem is because I find his music very interesting and that his lyrics actually mean something. He also appears in most of his videos and I prefer videos where they are realistic rather then cartoon etc. Like I said above Eminem appears in a lot of his videos. Sven E Carlsson created a theory for this known as the Commercial Exhibitionist which means that the reason artists put themselves in their own videos is because they are trying to sell an image and publicise their faces, so they are more recognised.

The Narcotic Anonymous room is dark on purpose. No sunlight seems to be allowed to penetrate in this bottle green background. It symbolizes a shadowed life full of pain and struggles. As the video and the lyrics guides us through Marshalls life, it transports us into his house where you will meet daddy and daughter in a dialogue, where his daughter is trying to show Marshal her paper shapes, and as well she is looking for her mother, that usually was in a rehab or in jail, and Hailie was left with no answer during her absence: Daddy look what I made", Dad's gotta go catch a plane "Daddy where's Mommy? I can't find Mommy where is she?" I don't know go play Hailie, baby, your Daddy's busy

In the video there is also a moment where Hailie blocks the door with boxes and the sunlight penetrates through into the room, unlike in the Narcotic Anonymous room however the boxes prevent the room from being completely full of sunlight, this represents that there is darkness in both their lifes even though they are hugging each other and also that there is another thing blocking them from happiness. The music video follows conventional methods with hip-hop/rap, you can see it with the use of Mise-en-scene because of his clothing, he is wearing baggy clothes which is what hip-

hop/rap artists normally wear. It follows some of Andrew Goodwins theorie s; there is a relationship between visuals, lyrics and music. The lyrics are represented by images. In the music video it cuts to Eminem standing in a mirror and the lyrics that go along with it are below. Goes in her pocket, pulls out a tiny necklace locket It's got a picture, "this'll keep you safe Daddy, take it withcha'" I look up, it's just me standing in the mirror
