Keep tires properly inflated

(NAPS)High gas prices should make more Americans become proinflationat least when it comes to tire pressure. The Facts The U.S. Department of Energy says properly inflated tires can improve fuel economy by 3.3 percent and save 1.2 billion gallons of gasoline nationally. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that underinflated tires contribute to more than 600 fatalities and 33,000 injuries a year. Yet fewer than one in five vehicles has four properly inflated tires, according to a Rubber Manufacturers Association tire pressure study. Worse, at least 15 percent of vehicles were found to have at least one tire underinflated by at least eight pounds per square inch (PSI). What You Can Do Heeding a few hints, however, can not only help motorists stay safe, but help them save money. Good driving habits help keep tires in optimum condition (avoid fast starts, stops, potholes and curbs). Take five minutes a month to check all your tires. Simple, regular maintenance can help drivers save as much as 12 cents per gallon at the pump and keep tires rolling longer so they dont need to be replaced as often. To be tire smart, you need to play your PARTPressure, Alignment, Rotation and Tread. These are the key elements of proper tire care. Pressure: Check tire pressure monthly with a tire gauge and inflate to vehicle manufacturers recommended pressure. Alignment: Misalignment of wheels can cause uneven and rapid tread wear. Rotation: Rotate tires every 5,000 to 8,000 miles to help you achieve more uniform wear. Tread: Advanced and unusual wear can reduce the ability of tread to grip the road in adverse conditions.

An honor and privilege to care for John Woodin

John Woodins passion was helping people. He accomplished this through his business in the stock market. John was so passionate about his work, he continued to work until three days before he passed away at 88 years old. In 2009, with declining health issues and wanting to remain at home, Johns family called Comfort Keepers. Care was provided for both John and Betti, his wife of 62 years. Care that included meal preparation, dressing assistance, laundry and transportation. Betti passed away in June, 2009. John continued to need help to stay in his home, and loved the wonderful meals his caregivers made for him. Johns health declined over time and his needs for services increased. Personal care services and Hoyer-Lift assistance were added, but Johns spirit for life always remained. John loved feeding the birds and squirrels, and the caregivers made sure the feeders were filled so John could enjoy watching nature. In the last couple days of Dads life, caregiver Charlene gave me a book about dying, Wendy said. That was such a thoughtful gesture that, even in her grief, she would reach out to me. Johns last days and hours were filled with so many wonderful little things, thanks in part to the caregivers who also participated in a little retirement party that Wendy put together for him. Kohl's donates $1.5 million to Hunger Task Force

Dear Dr. Winter, I was wondering if most people are happy with their dentures? Do they eat well? I have 6 veneers that have failed. After they were installed I couldn't eat or speak properly and my back teeth didn't touch any more! Then the dentist ground on 22 other teeth to make them fit and my bite is off and I am miserable. I would like to have all my teeth pulled and have dentures! How much does this cost and will I be happy? Dear Janet, I am sorry you are having problems. From your question, I am not sure I fully understand what you are going through. You may have a bite problem, a skeletal problem or a cosmetic issue or a combination of the above. First, you should realize that If you can keep your teeth you will chew more efficiently, eat better, extract better nutrition from your food and be happier in the long run. People that have had dentures for 5 years typically chew with one fifth the biting force of people that have their natural teeth. Second, dentures don't work like teeth. They are big pieces of acrylic with denture teeth. They block the roof of your mouth from taste sensations and they can dislodge with sneezing, yawning or chewing. Over time they will contribute to further deterioration of the underlying bone through movement of the dentures and friction. So if your situation can be identified, and fixed, that is what you should do. It is very easy to think that pulling teeth and getting dentures will be a solution but in reality they render you a dental cripple with a prosthesis that must be relined or remade every 3-5 years as your gum tissues change. Then if you want to replace these dentures with implant retained dentures or bridges it can be a long and expensive course of treatment compared to saving your natural teeth. So your dentist should evaluate your bite and cosmetics from before your veneers were done and try and recreate the situation where you were comfortable and happy. We would be happy to see you for a second opinion. Dear Dr. Winter, My wife just had grafting to her gums because they were receding. The Friends of Boerner Botanical Gardens (FBBG) will present Autumn at Boernera day of autumn-themed activities, childrens crafts and a craft fairSunday, Sept. 8. The fundraising event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Boerner Botanical Gardens, 9400 Boerner Drive in Franklin. Food concessions will also be available for purchase from the Hales Corners Lions Club.
