There is immense beauty in the tapestry of our pupils, our schools, our communities, our society. Each unique strand of thread, vibrant, interwoven and connected to another to gain strength greater than lone achievable. The intersections of our multi-layered lives form the knots and bonds, our intricate memories and shared experiences, our histories and heritages stitched together into beauty unrecognizable and constantly evolving.

Learning environment
I believe that to optimise learning and achievement, the classroom environment should be structured, enjoyable and inviting. If you were to walk into my classroom on a typical day, these are some things you might notice: a community circle in progress; your child working independently, in a small group or with myself; vibrant charts on the walls that guide your childs learning; student work displayed; or your child engaged in physical activities in learning French or Mathematics. In my classroom, you would see your child reading, writing, speaking, role playing, solving puzzles, working with mathematical manipulatives, watching videos or using educational technology. You will hear French being spoken, classical music playing, singing and laughter.

Franais
I believe in a Balanced Literacy approach to teaching French. Your child will develop in reading, writing and oral communication skills through a variety of activities, including teacher directed activities and lessons, individual tasks and group work. My goal is also to engage your child in the learning of French by inciting authentic discussions and introducing him/her to francophone culture.

Literacy Development
Explicit skill instruction e.g. modeling strategies like re-reading, visualizing, inferring, making connections 1-on-1 conferencing, small guided groups and whole class activities Co-development and frequent use of anchor charts (i.e. exemplars with reminders or tips on effective reading/ writing strategies) Incorporate phonics i.e. teaching the most common phonemes, the smallest units of sound such as eau or ai Gradual release of control: teacher models, then guides a student to model a strategy, and then other students try it themselves

Mathematics

Your child will be encouraged to use manipulatives (physical objects) to help her/him develop mathematical concepts and solve real-life mathematical problems. Communicating how he/she came to solve a problem is as important, if not more important, than the actual solution itself. How your child will communicate his/her understanding: numbers, words, pictures, labels, tables, lists, action, etc.

DIGITAL NATION
I am a strong proponent of educational technology, whether teaching Math, French or other subjects. I hope to incorporate more iPad apps in my lessons this year, and to continue using the Smart Board (perfect for Math problem solving), webbased activities and a document camera.

Citizenship Development
As world-citizens and compassionate teachers we must find authentic ways to teach your child to embrace and value the diversity that constitutes our evolving society. In my classroom, I will use Tribes-based principles and incorporate lessons about communities around the world to achieve this.

I believe that it is our moral duty as educators to help your child develop a sense of responsibility to take positive action to help protect our environment.

Please check my class website regularly for important notices and newsletters.
