A Characteristic Comparison

CHARACTERISTIC COMPARISONS OF WAVE AND LAP WINDINGS

LAP WINDING
If connection is in started form conductor in slot, then connections overlap each other as winding proceeds til starting point is reached again. Number of parallel paths = holes = brushes preferable for high current low voltage capacity generator A two-layer winding in which each coil/conductor is connected in series to the adjacent coil/conductor. Normally used in generators with capacity of more than 500A The commutator pitch for the lap windings is given by yc = m, m = 1, 2, 3... (20) Requires more conductors to produce EMF. Equilizing connections are necessary Coils are connected from the end of the previous coil and progresses until the end. Yb and Yf are nearly equal to the pole pitch Current paths are determined by the product of multiplicity and the number of paths Requires more number of turns per armature

WAVE WINDING
Type of connection winding always travels ahead avoiding overlapping. It travels like a progressive wave

Number of parallel paths=2 Preferable for high voltage low current capacity generator. Armature conductors are divided into as many parallel paths as the number of poles of the generator. Normally used in generators with capacity of less than 500A Commutator pitch, YC = YA (in lap winding YC = 1 ). Also YC = (No.ofcommutator bars 1 ) / No.of pair of poles. Gives more EMF with a given number of conductors compared to Lap Winding Equilizing connections can be omitted Coils are connected at the start of the first coil making in retrogressive in nature Yb and Yf are independently odd in value Current paths are always twice the number of multiplicity Requires less number of turns per armature
