The Minister for Correctional Services congratulated 10 youths who participated in the Northern Territory's first Youth Boot Camp trial, which took place over 10 days in South Australia's Flinders Ranges. The boot camp focused on preventing offending behavior through mental and physical challenges. Initial feedback indicates the youths have adopted positive lessons and are displaying better behavior and discipline. The program aims to support the youths and prevent them from returning to prior offending, in the hopes they set goals to turn their lives around from a lifetime of crime. A second 10-day boot camp trial is currently taking place near Alice Springs.

16 September 2013 Minister for Correctional Services John Elferink has congratulated 10 youths who have participated in the first Youth Boot Camp trial for youth at risk of offending in the Northern Territory. Speaking at a ceremony this evening, Mr Elferink said the youths had embarked on a steep learning curve to correct their attitudes and behaviour. Initial feedback indicates these youths have adopted many of the lessons taught on the 10-day hike in South Australias Flinders Ranges. The youths were set both mental and physical challenges, with a focus on the prevention of offending behaviour. It appears they are already displaying better behaviour and are more disciplined. The youths are offered support and mentoring following the program in an attempt to prevent them returning to their prior offending behaviour. I hope they use the opportunity to set goals for their future, and turn their lives around from a lifetime of offending. A multi-agency approach is used to identify youths at risk of entering into the justice system, and aims to correct their behaviour. A second 10-day trial is currently being run by Tangentyere Council at Walkabout Bore, outside of Alice Springs. Media Contact: Danielle Lede 0404 515 414
