E-84 Multimeter Problems Solution Key

AC Voltmeter Circuit. The following diagram shows the AC (Volts) circuit. It is more complex to analyze in detail, since the AC signal passes through a diode producing an input signal to the ammeter which is always positive, but not DC.

The ammeter reading is proportional to the average current through the ammeter. Later in the course well show that the average voltage following the diode is <VB> (2 VAC 0.7)/ volts, so that <VB> = 4.28 V for VAC = 10 V. a. Find the value for RIN that will produce an average current of .043 mA through the ammeterthe result will differ a bit from the value of 83 k shown on the schematic. Solution: As in Prob. 1: For a full-value ammeter reading, <VA> = .0856 V, and <I1> = .0488 mA. But RIN = (<VB> - <VA>)/<I1>, Hence we find (for <VB> = 4.28 V) RIN = 85.9 k (vs 83 k on the schematic) b. Based on this result, find the values for RIN that should be used to produce a full scale reading for: VAC = 50 V, VAC = 250 V, and VAC = 1000 V Solution: As in Part a: We find: For VAC = 50 V, <VB> = 22.3 V and RIN = 455 k (443 k on the schematic) For VAC = 250 V, <VB> = 112.3 V and RIN = 2.30 M (2.24 M on the schematic) For VAC = 1,000 V, <VB> = 450 V and RIN = 9.22 M (8.99 M on the schematic)
