ELECOMM CASE#6 MARTEK MARINE LTD Martek Marine was established in 2000 and, it would like to achieve a high

turnover from its starting capital. To achieve this success it plans to use teleworking to provide a 24/7 response time to its clients alongside maximizing the productivity of its staff who are frequently on the move. It would also like to develop a website where customers may view the different maritime services being offered by the company. The market in which Martek was determined to succeed was one with exceptional demands. The global nature of the maritime business means that a successful supplier needs to be able to provide high level of response to clients who maybe almost anywhere and in many time zones. With international law demanding the installation of safety monitoring systems, the market is large and potentially lucrative, but it is also highly competitive. In order to succeed, Martek needs to differentiate itself not only through the quality of its products but also through its ability to respond to clients at any time of day and night and to provide a level of human and technical services. Inevitably, this means that its employees would spend days on the move time that represented a huge potential loss of productivity unless effectively utilized. The staff would need to be able to interface with the companys core systems from almost any location in the world to access the data they require to do their jobs. Finally, it had to have an engine to present its products to its client and different markets and that is why the company also thought of developing a website that would reach its farthest market or client in the quickest possible time. The challenges posed to Martek were as follows: a) Recruitment, training and encouragement of right staff to create a dynamic, fun and empowered workplace b) The development of a comprehensive tele-working strategy the development of a website which features highly a good search engine and accessible interface The various tips offered are as follows: a) Be very liberal in the implementation of the tele-working and website endeavor. b) Carry out a comprehensive consultation with staff so the successfully embark on this technological change. c) Seek out technologies and embrace them; dare to be different and lead the way.
