La Plata invites parents to prom

LA PLATA, Md. - La Plata High School recently announced, in an effort to thwart scandalous activity and unite school and community, that they have invited parents of juniors and seniors to attend the prom festivities along with their children. This new initiative was created by an overhauled administrative team and the Faculty Prom Task Force, a new program made up of teachers and staff members to facilitate a safe, fun, and educational prom. The new focus on education and community at the prom will refocus a night that is usually reserved for dancing. A DJ will be supplemented by members of Unplugged, La Platas a cappella group, and the events throughout the night will include a parent vs. student quiz bowl. Although student reactions are expected to be mixed, the event will help promote Common Core-aligned activities in a relaxed atmosphere, and the structure of the event could become the standard requirement for other schools in Charles County beginning in the 2014-2015 school year.
