BLOOD CULTURES FOR C&S

MATERIAL: 1. Blood Culture bottle - A set of two for adults (orange & green top) , One for children (yellow top) 2. Tourniquet 3. Alcohol swab 4. Iodine swab 5. Syringe and 23G or 25G butterfly 6. Gauze 7. QGH General Requisition PROCEDURE: 1. Examine the bottle of broth before taking the blood sample and discard it if any evidence of contamination can be seen. 2. Prepare the bottle for inoculation before taking the blood sample. Remove the green or orange or yellow plastic flip-off cap and disinfect the exposed part of the rubber stopper. Collect green top first before orange top bottle. 3. Identify the patient. 4. The venipuncture site is prepared by cleaning with an iodine swab followed by an alcohol swab. Do not touch the site after disinfecting. 5. Perform the venipuncture. 6. Aseptically inject a maximum volume of 10 mL for adult or 5 mL for peds of blood through the central ring of the rubber stopper. 7. Thoroughly mix the blood with the broth in the bottle. 8. Write the patients name and identification details on the bottle label. 9. Place the bottle in the incubator. Send to the laboratory at room temperature. NOTES:

Recommended Volume Children: 1 to 5 mL of blood per bottle Adults: 5 to 10 mL of blood per bottle

Number and Timing of Blood Cultures Collect a set of two blood cultures for adults. If two sets are required collect about 20 minutes
