Lab Ia: Chemists need to be skilled observers

OBJECTIVES: 1. Determine the many ways that we can make observations. 2. Be able to distinguish between observations and inferences. TASK: Pre-lab: Define the following observation, inference, measurement, qualitative, quantitative, matter, anti-matter. Write a brief list of procedural activities. Use the materials and apparatus provided to complete the data table provided. MATERIALS: Dilute hydrochloric acid, zinc granules, copper wire, ethanol, sodium carbonate solution, copper(II) sulphate solution, universal indicator. APPARATUS: 7 test tubes, test tube holder, test tube rack, watch glass, ruler, thermometer, balance, measuring cylinder DATA: Mix the following: 1. Dilute hydrochloric acid and zinc granule 2. Copper wire heated in an open flame 3. Ethanol and air heated 4. Sodium carbonate and copper(II) sulphate solutions 5. Universal indicator and a) hydrochloric acid OBSERVATIONS(INCLUDING INFERENCES MEASUREMENTS)

b) sodium carbonate c) ethanol

ANALYSIS: What do your observations mean? DISCUSSION: Is there any other information/interpretations/further questions that you wish to record? CONCLUSION: How has this task helped you find the answers to your objectives?
