CONDENSERS

rejects the heat from the reefer

system (evaporator and compressor). Receives superheated vapor from the "hot gas" line. Approximately 90% way through the condenser all the vapor is turned into a liquid.
This liquid is subcooled. The cooling medium can be air, water

(sea water), or sometimes a secondary refrigerant.

The saturated temperature of the refrigerant in

the condenser determines the pressure in the high side of the system
The higher the refrigerant temperature, the higher

the high side pressure

CONDENSERS:

Three basic types;

Air-cooled Water-cooled (marine applications) Evaporative / Cooling Tower

Air cooled condenser

Are the most inefficient type for system operation

but:
Cheapest to construct Can be placed in most applications Convenient and reliable

Doesnt need a water source

Water Cooled Condensers

The most efficient type of condenser but:

High initial cost Need a large, replenishing water source Requires auxiliary system Potentially high maintenance

Coaxial Condenser Coils

Coaxial chillers are used for a variety of water

chilling, custom chiller and special cooling applications. They are most often used in water or ground source heat pump applications since they can operate as condensers and/or evaporators. Engineered for maximum heat transfer High efficiency Simplicity of design and installation

Evaporative condensers
Two general types
Evaporative condenser Cooling towers

Water flow of 3-4 gpm per ton

The flow of the cooling medium

regulates the compressor high side pressure.

In a water cooled system, the water

flow from the condenser is regulated by a regulating valve. The sensing line for controlling the regulating valve water flow out is located at the compressor discharge.

Adjusting screw

Sensing line from Condenser shell (Compressor discharge)

A loss of water flow will cause the

compressor to shut down due to high pressure. All pressure vessels in a refrigeration system that can be isolated with a valve must be fitted with relief valves.
If more than one relief valve, these

relief valve cannot be piped in series.

The refrigerant level in the

condenser varies with the load of the system (or it could be an indicator of the system's charge).
Also salt water cooled condensers have zincs to

prevent cathodic corrosion.
