The Week of September 16

Mathematics
Even Steven and Odd Todd are in the building! This week we continued to solve for missing addends and totals. We also defined even and odd numbers. If a numbers last digit is 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8, the number is even. If a numbers last digit is 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9, the number is odd. When we count by 2s, we are counting the even numbers. Even numbers always have a pair and no one is left out. Odd numbers always have one odd duck left out of the group! We also discovered that even numbers can be split evenly down the middle. In other words, the sum of doubles facts are always even numbers! Check it Even out:

We love Daily 5 stations. Right now we are just practicing 4 of the 5 stations. At the word work table, students can use lots of fun materials to write their spelling words. They can use markers, gel pens, rubber stamps, magnets, and dry erase markers. They also play games, like tic-tac-toe and rolling dice, to determine how they are going to write their words (what color, bubble letters, dotted letters, etc.) When students are at the writing station, they can work on their writing by composing a letter, story, postcard, greeting card, recipe, or a poem. Its so much fun to have choices! As long as we are practicing, we might as well have fun!
