Welcome to Curriculum Night 2013!

I graduated from Washington State University. I was raised in the Snoqualmie Valley and was a student in the Snoqualmie Valley School District. I love reading, the Seahawks, and college football!

I am married to a great man and we have a beautiful 5 month old daughter, Addilyn, and a wonderful dog named Moses.

First Grade is a year of growth and lots of new skills!


This year your child will begin to learn the most essential academic skills. Learning is a continuous and developmental process. Hands-on activities and interactions are critical to young learners. Understanding takes time and practice, especially with reading!

Writing
Opinion Friendly Letters Poetry Reporting/Informational Narrative Conventions, Handwriting, etc.

Reading
Consists of two components: 1. Daily 5 Literacy Block in 1C
Daily 5 is a literacy management system designed to provide students the chance to gain independence as well as the chance for optimal learning in literacy. *see letter/info sheet in packet

2. Skill Groups as a whole first grade


Students will be split into four groups amongst the four teachers for a portion of time each day. The groups are based off of what each child needs in reading.

Homework
READING LOG:
20 minutes of reading a day! Your student can read, be read to, or read to you. Please record what was read each day, and for how long, and at the end of the week please sign the bottom of the reading log. Student reading time will be recorded and certain markers will be celebrated!

ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES: (Will Start Next Week)

Monday through Thursday students will have a chance to complete an enrichment activity with their families. Please initial next to each activity that was completed. Enrichment activities and worksheets provide extra reinforcement for what is being taught in the classroom. Please do not feel pressure to complete every activity, every week.

Spelling
Each week your child will have a spelling list of five Word Wall Words, plus five words that follow our spelling rule for the week. Practice at home is essential to our spelling program. They will have a spelling check in each Friday to demonstrate what they have learned.

Social Skills and School Social Thinking Curriculum Skills


Social Thinking curriculum is used in first gradeExpected and Unexpected Behavior. Super Flex and other characters help remind students to get back on track. Basic school skills: homework, sitting at a desk, listening, raising hands, being a good friend, independence, etc.

Gold Tag Time!


Each week, your student has the chance to earn gold tags for expected behavior. These gold tags are also taken for unexpected behavior. They try to earn as many as they can for Gold Tag Time on Fridays.

Volunteers
Thank you for your willingness to volunteer! I have saved all of your volunteer forms on which you stated your scheduling preferences.
You will be emailed a copy of the schedule by myself or by our wonderful room parent each month before it is final. This allows you to cross check with your schedule. If a time does not work for you, or you will not be able to make it in that day, please email me as soon as possible.

Family Involvement Programs:


Mystery Readers:
A weekly program that invites family members and community members into our classroom to conduct read a loud on Fridays. They will provide us with clues to see if we can guess who is joining us that day!

Star of the Week:


Each week we will have one student is the Star of the Week. They will participate in a unique and special activity each day to help our class get to know them better.

Family Involvement Programs:


Estimation Jars: -Please guess how many Hersheys Kisses are in our estimation jar before you leave. Please write your childs name on the post it before you place it on our chart. Each week a different child will get to take home the jar and fill it up with another small object and bring back for the class to try to guess!

This is a rigorous professional development opportunity for Mrs. Carr, sponsored by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Requires providing evidence, video, and written reflection to prove powerful and successful teaching. This process does not change the curriculum or class procedures, it is an after school project for Mrs. Carr. Please sign the video release form for your child, and one for yourself if you plan to volunteer.
