OBAMA’S 2010 BUDGET BEGINS TO REBUILD DIPLOMATIC AND DEVELOPMENT CAPABILITIES

STATEMENT FROM SAMUEL A. WORTHINGTON, INTERACTION PRESIDENT & CEO

Washington, DC (February 26, 2009)—“President Obama’s proposed investments in the State

Department and U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) illustrate his commendable
commitment to making a world that is more prosperous, stable and secure. This increased
investment in the civilian arms of our international presence costs little relative to the rest of
our budget, around 1.4%, yet will help us begin to rebuild our diplomatic and development
capabilities.

Our current economic crisis takes center stage right now, however, it is reassuring to see that
the president understands how our investments abroad actually protect our families, jobs, and
national security. Failing to adequately support our international development and
humantarian programs that work with the world’s poorest people to reduce global poverty and
promote economic growth undermine our own national interests.

InterAction and its 175 member organizations urge Congress to step up, embrace President
Obama’s vision for strengthening America’s international engagement, and match the
president’s leadership in investing in a better, safer world tomorrow.”
