The Four Types of Sentences


Declarative Interrogative Imperative Exclamatory

Declarative Sentences
Make a statement How you can tell:
Begins with a capital letter and ends with a period. Example:
I like pizza My cat purrs. Its going to rain.

Interrogative Sentences
Ask a question How you can tell:
Begins with a capital letter and ends with a question mark (?) Example:
Is it going to rain today? Do you like pizza? What colour is your Mustang?

Imperative Sentences
Are commands or requests. How you can tell:
The subject (you) is implied Begins with a capital letter and ends with a period. Examples:
Go ride your bike Get out of the kitchen. No cake before supper.

Exclamatory Sentences
Show strong emotion How you can tell:
Begins with a capital letter and ends with an exclamation point (!) Examples:
I love going to the movies! I crashed my bike! Get out of the kitchen!
