BLOOD
Whole blood contains red cells, white cells, and platelets suspended in plasma
COMPONENTS
RED CELLS
Red cells carry oxygen from the lungs to body's tissue and take carbon dioxide back to lungs to be exhaled
PLASMA
Plasma is fluid, composed of about 92% water, 7% vital proteins such as Albumin,Globulin, Fibrin
PLATELETS
Platelets are small, colourless cell fragments in the blood who's main function is to interact with clotting proteins to stop or prevent bleeding
TYPES OF BLOOD
A blood type is a classification of blood based on the presence or absence of inherited antigenic substances on the surface of red blood cells
Wear clothing with sleeves that can be raised above the elbow. Let the person taking your blood know if you have a preferred arm and show them any good veins that have been used successfully in the past to draw blood. Relax, listen to music, talk to other donors or read during the donation process. Take the time to enjoy a snack and a drink in the refreshments area immediately after donating.
Be healthy. Be at least 17 years old in most states, or 16 years old with parental consent if allowed by state law Weigh at least 110 lbs. Additional weight requirements apply for donors 18 years old and younger and all high school donors.
DONOR INFORMATION
The most needed blood types are O+, O-, AB- and B-. These blood types are absolutely critical.
If you have one of the critical blood types but do not have a donor card, go to the blood drives anyway
