DRONACHARYA AWARD FOR 2012
The names of six sporting coaches were
recommended for the Dronacharya Awards
for the year 2012. Wrestling coach Yashvir
Singh, Boxing Coach BI Fernandez, Athlet-
ics Coach Virender Poonia, Kabaddi Coach
Sunil Davas, Parat hletics Coach Dr.
Satyapaul and Hockey Coach Harinder Singh
are the six coaches who have been selected
for the coveted award, given to the coach of
different sports, for their excellent contribu-
tion to the sports.
Boxing Coach BI Fernandez, who is a
Cuban national, became the first foreign
coach to be recommended for t he
Dronacharya Award. Fernandez has been in-
strumental in Indias impressive perfor-
mances in Boxing in the international tour-
naments.
The Dronacharya Awards committee
was headed by former Indian hockey captain
Aslam Sher Khan. The other members in-
clude Rajkumar Sangwan (boxing), Dhanraj
Pillai (hockey), Shiny Wilson (athletics),
Morad Ali Khan (shooting), Karnam
Malleswari (weightlifting), Bahadur Singh
(at hlet ics), Bhupender Dhawan
(powerlifting,G S Sandhu (boxing),
Ramphan Mann(wrestling,Prem Chand
Degra (body building).
MAGSAYSAY AWARDS 2012
Indian social activist Kulandei Francis,
age sixty six will be felicitated with the
Magsaysay Award. In the year 1979, Francis
begun with his organisation, Integrated Vil-
lage Development Project (IVDP) in
Krishnagiri, wherein he initially started with
small projects, amongst his achievements, he
has conducted night schools in the light of
gas lamps, set up first aid centres. Then, with
the help of development organizations, he
undertook a micro-watershed programme
that, over twenty-two years, built three thirty
one mostly small check dams benefitting
cultivators and their families in sixty villages.
His organisation, the Integrated Village De-
velopment Project also provides training to
rural students a in enhancing their skills
namely training in rural sanitation, accoun-
tancy, management, giving educational assis-
tance for students in high schools, scholar-
ships and also computer skills. The vision-
ary Mr. Francis was also successful in pur-
suing the holistic economic empowerment of
thousands of women and their families. The
Board of Trustees of the Ramon Magsaysay
Award Foundation (RMAF) announced the
recipients of this year, 2012 Asias premier
prize, the Ramon Magsaysay Award on 25
July 2012.
The six individuals chosen from around
the globe are from countries, Bangladesh,
Cambodia, India, Indonesia, the Philippines,

Ms Chen Shu-Chu from Taiwan, Mr Romulo
Davide from the Phillipines, Ms Syeda
Rizwana Hasan of Bangladesh, Mr Yang
Saing Koma of Cambodia and Mr Ambrosius
Ruwindrijarto from Indonesia.
Kulandai Francis who has been awarded
with the Magsaysay says, working with the
objective of eradicating poverty and empow-
ering more than one lakh rural women for
thirty five long years has got him the award.
Magsaysay Award winners receive a
certificate, a medallion bearing the likeness
of the late President, and a cash prize. They
will be formally felicitated with t he
Magsaysay Award during the Presentation
Ceremonies which is to be held on 31 Au-
gust 2012 at the Philippine International Con-
vention Center (PICC) in Manila. In the past,
many Indians have won the Magsaysay
award. In the year 1958, awardee was Vinoba
Bhave, in the year 1959 C.D Deshmukh,
again in the year 1994, it was awarded to
Kiran Bedi, in 1996, T.N seshan , in the year
2003, James Michael Lyngdoh,in the year
1965 Jayaprakash Narayan, In 1974 M.S.
Subbulakshmi was awarded, in 1982
Manibhai Desaiwas awarded. Ramn del
Fierro Magsaysay was the seventh President
of the Republic of the Philippines, he served
from 30 December 1953 until his death in a
1957 aircraft disaster. The Ramon Magsaysay
Award known as Asias Nobel Prize was es-
tablished in April 1957 by the trustees of the
Rockefeller Brothers.
SARASWATI SAMMAN 2011
The K K Birla Foundation announced
on 22 March 2012 its decision to honour
Tamil writer A A Manavalan wit h the
Saraswati Samman 2011 for his book on
Ramayana. Retired professor and head of the
department of Tamil in Madras University,
Manavalan is be bestowed with the 21st
Saraswati Samman for his work Irama
Kathaiyum Iramayakalum (Ramakatha and
Ramayanas) published in 2005. Special ar-
eas of interest of Manavalan who is a scholar
in Tamil, English, Hindi and Telugu are trans-
lation and comparative literature. He was
trained in these areas by professors Henry
H.H. Remak and Ulrich Weisston in the Uni-
versity of Indiana in Bloomington, United
States.
The award-winning book, Irama
Kathaiyum Iramayakalum is a comparative
study of 48 Ramayanas in the languages of
Pali, Sanskrit, Prakrit, Tibetan, Tamil, Old
Javenese, Japanese, Telugu, Assamese, Thai
and Kashmiri. The Saraswati Samman car-
ries award money of Rs 7.5 lakh, a citation
and a plaque.The prestigious award was in-
stituted by the K K Birla Foundation in 1991.
The award is conferred upon every year for
an outstanding literary work written in any
Indian language mentioned in Schedule VIII
to the Constitution of India by an Indian citi-
zen and published in the last ten years. The
award carries a prize money of Rs 750000, a
citation and a plaque. The selection for the

the 21

Bihari Puraskar for 2011 to Arjundeo
Charan for his Rajasthani poetry collection
Ghar Tau Ek Nam Hai Bhrosai Rau . The
award carries prize money of Rs.1 lakh, a
citation and a plaque.The award, installed in
the name of the famous Hindi poet Bihari, is
given only to Rajasthani writers.Dr. Charan
was born in 1954 in Jodhpur district. An out-
standing poet, critic, playwright, and trans-
lator, the central theme of Dr. Charans po-
ems is the poor condition and constant
struggles faced by women in a stridently feu-
dal society. Dr. Charan is a Sahitya Akademi
award winner and is presently the Head of
the Rajasthani Language Department at
Jayanarayan University, Jodhpur. His works
have been translated into a number of Indian
languages.The Ghar Tau anthology
explores lifes ironies, changing values, and
continuing contradictions in Indian social
structures.
54TH ANNUAL GRAMMY AWARDS
The 54th Annual Grammy Awards were
held on 12 February 2012, at the Staples Cen-
ter in Los Angeles. The death of pop diva
Whitney Houston the night before the
Grammy awards however cast a sombre
mood at the awards. The producers quickly
planned a tribute to her in the form of a per-
formance by Jennifer Hudson. Paul
McCartney received the MusiCares Person
of the Year award on 10 February 2012, at
the Los Angeles Convention Center. British
singer Adele, with six nominations, won all
six awards, tying Beyoncs record for most
wins by a female artist in one night. Foo
Fighters and Kanye West followed with five
and four awards, respectively. The British
songstress, Adele swept the awards winning
a staggering six golden gramophones for her
Album, 21. Adele, who was named best new
artist in 2009, is only the second artist in his-
tory to take all four major Grammy catego-
ries. Christopher Cross attained the feat in
1981 with a four-award sweep. Kanye West
was the top nominee with seven nods. How-
ever West once again had to satisfy himself
with rap wins. West captured four awards to
add to his 14 previous wins, for best rap/sung
collaboration and best rap song (for All of
the Lights), best rap performance (for Otis,
shared with Jay-Z) and best rap album (My
Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy).

Awards
The sixty-fifth annual British Academy
Film awards, the BAFTAs was held at the
Royal Opera House in London 12 February

buster also won the best actor award for its
star Jean Dujardin, who beat British favourite
Gary Oldman. The Artist directed by Michel
Hazanavicius is a French-made romance set
in Hollywood in the 1920s and 30s. The film
tells the story of a star of silent movies whose
career is destroyed by the advent of talkies.
It had been nominated for 12 awards and
walked away with the prizes for best film,
leading actor, director, original screenplay,
costumes, cinematography and music.
21ST VYAS SAMMAN
Noted Hindi writer Professor
Ramdarash Mishra was selected for the 21st
Vyas Samman for his poetry collection Aam
Ke Patte published in 2004. A selection com-
mittee headed by Suryaprasad Dixit, a well-
known writer and former chairperson of
Lucknow Universitys Hindi department, se-
lected the collection for the award. The prize
money for Vyas Samman is Rs 2.5 lakh.
Professor Mishra, a veteran writer, was
born on 15 August 1924, in Uttar Pradeshs
Gorakhpur district. He served in Delhi
Universitys Hindi department and retired as
professor there. His published works include
16 collections of poetry, 13 novels and 18
short story collections. His notable poetry
collections include Pak gai hai dhoop, Path
ke Geet, Kandhe par Suraj and Barish mein
bheegte bache. His novels- Jal Tootata Hua
and Paani ke Prachir received with critical
acclaim. The award, instituted by the K.K.
Birla Foundation, is given annually for an
outstanding literary work in Hindi published
during the past 10 years. The award carries a
cash purse of Rs. 2.5 lakh. After the Saraswati
Samman, which is given for a work chosen
from among works in all leading Indian lan-
guages, the Vyas Samman is the most presti-
gious award given by the Foundation.
GREEN GLOBE AWARD
Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan
received a Green Globe for Outstanding Ef-
forts by a Celebrity for his efforts toward a
greener future at the fourth edition of the
Panasonic Green Globe Foundation Awards
on 2 february 2012. He received the award
from Hollywood actor and former Governor
of California Arnold Schwarzenegger. The
award is conferred to honour the efforts of
organisations and individuals fighting climate
change through their work in environment
preservation and regeneration.
The Terminator star, Schwarzenegger
was the guest of honour at the event.
G.D. BIRLA AWARD
Tapas Kumar Kundu of Bangalore-
based Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced
Scientific Research has been selected for the
G.D. Birla award for his contribution in bio-
chemistry. The award, instituted by the K.K.
Birla Foundation for according recognition
to high calibre scientific research undertaken
by Indian scientists below the age of 50, car-
ries a purse of Rs 1.5 lakh. Mr. Kundu, who

links to disease and therapeutics. He not only
elucidated the mechanism of transcription
regulation through the epigenetic modifica-
tions in humans but also used the process to
design new generation cancer diagnostics, as
well as therapeutics for cancer, AIDS and
diabetes. Born in 1962, Mr. Kundu did his
Masters in Biochemistry at the University of
Agricultural Sciences and PhD from Indian
Institute of Science, Bangalore. He did his
post-doctoral work at the National Institute
of Genetics in Mishima in Japan and
Rockfeller University, New York.
NORMAN BORLAUG AWARD
Aditi Mukherjee, a Delhi based scientist, won
the prestigious Norman Borlaug Award in Field
Research and Application. Mukherjee was picked for
the award for her work in transforming access to water
for thousands of farmers in West Bengal. The award
will be formally presented to Mukherji on 17 October
2012 in Des Moines, Iowa, US. Mukherji, 37, is a
senior researcher at the Delhi office of the International
Water Management Institute (IWMI). As alumnus of
Presidency College (Kolkata), JNU (Delhi), she
completed her PhD at the University of Cambridge.
The international award is conferred by the World
Food Prize Foundation, which was started by Norman
Borlogue, the father of Green Revolution in India. The
award carries 10000 dollar cash prize. The Borlaug
Award is restricted to scientists under 40.
SHRAM AWARDS FOR YEAR 2011
Union Ministry of Labour and Employ-
ment announced the Prime Minister Shram
Awards for year 2011 on 15 August 2012.
This year, no nomination was found suitable
for the presitigious Shram Ratna Award. Six
nominations for the Shram Bhushan Award,
Thirty Three nominations for Shram Vir/
Shram Veerangana and twenty nine nomina-
tions for Shram Shree/Shram Devi Awards
have been selected. Even though, the total
number of Shram Awards is 33, the number
of workers receiving the Awards is 68 (In-
cluding six women), as some of the Awards
have been shared by workers and/or teams
of workers consisting of more than one
worker. These include 52 workers from the
public sector and 16 workers from the pri-
vate sector. Shram Bhushan awards carry a
cash prize of 1 lakh rupees and a Sanad.
Shram Veer/Veerangana awards carry a cash
prize of 60000 rupees and a Sanad. Shram
Shree/Devi Awards comprise of a cash prize
of 40000 rupees and a Sanad. Shram Awards
were set up by the Government of India in
1985 to recognize the outstanding contribu-
tions of workers in different fields.
WORLD SAND SCULPTURE CHAMPIONSHIP 2012
Indian Sand Artist Sudarshan Pattnaik
won Peoples Choice Gold Medal Award in
Moscow. It was the Second World Sand
Sculpture Championship. The theme of
World Sand Sculpture Championship 2012
was World Cinema. Artist from eleven
countries took part in this championship. It
includes following Countries: India, Spain,
Ireland, Germany, the United States, Russia,
United Kingdom, Italy, Poland, Holland and
Czech Republic. He sculpted the copy of the
face of The Showman of the Millennium Raj
Kapoor. His interpretation of Raj Kapoor was

World Championship 2008. His sand sculp-
ture was based on the awareness about glo-
bal warming. Pattnaik had participated in
50(approx) international Sand Sculpture
Championships across the World. He had
won his first Prize in Copenhagen Sand
Sculpture Championship in Denmark.
World Sand Sculpture Championship: In
this Championship artists have to make
sculptures with the help of sand and Water.
Judges provide them the required amount of
area and artist has to make their sculpture
within those parameters only. There is no
flexible time to work and artists have to as-
sign the title sign before making any sculp-
ture. He also won two gold medals and a
trophy in Solo International Sand Sculpture
contest 2012. Sudarshan Pattnaik belongs to
the Odisha State.
ONDAATJE PRIZE 2012
Rahul Bhattacharya, the Delhi-based
author, on 29 May 2012 won the prestigious
Ondaatje Prize 2012 for his book The Sly
Company of People Who Care.
He is the first Indian author to have re-
ceived the award. Bhattacharya was also con-
ferred with the Hindu Literary Prize for Best
Fiction, 2011 for the same book. The 10000
pounds award is conferred by the Royal So-
ciety of Literature every year to recognize a
work of fiction, non-fiction or poetry which
evokes the spirit of a place. The award is pre-
sented to the author who is a citizen of or
who has been resident in the Commonwealth
or Ireland. The other authors whose work
were shortlisted for the prize include Julia
Blackburns Thin Paths, Teju Coles Open
City, Paul Farley and Michael Symmons
Roberts Edgelands, Olivia Laings To the
River and Tim Robinsons Connemara.

NTR NATIONAL LITERARY AWARD
Noted Tamil writer Ashokamitran,
known for his novel Thanneer and other
works was declared the recipient of the 6
th
NTR National Literary Award on 4 May
2012. The award was presented on 28 May
2012. The writer was born in Secunderabad
and was closest to Telugu culture, language
and people. The announcement was made by
chairperson of NTR Vignan Trust Nandamuri
Lakshmi Parvati who recalled how the award
was established and began with Kannada
writer S.L. Bhyrappa, A. Somasundaram
(Telugu), Sachidanandan (Malayalam),
Mahasweta Devi and Gnanpith awardee C.
Narayana Reddy. The jury comprised writer
Volga, Professor N. Krupanandam of the
University of Hyderabad and litterateur Ketu
Vishwanatha Reddy. Ashokamitrans name
was finalised unanimously, considering the
number of his works that were translated in
other languages and their relevance to Telugu.
