Keep in Touch with Reality Workshop: Media Resources

The 19th of January, 2013 Diana Pitea Imre Marton David Speight Warm up activity: 10 minutes The students were divided into 6 teams and were asked to solve a word search puzzle with vocabulary connected to media. Each team received a bag of candies after finding all the hidden words. Presentation: 20 minutes The students were asked to brainstorm around the idea of media and especially written media; then the teachers displayed a power point presentation on the topic of media. Students were shown different types of newspapers, how to write an article and the importance of pictures and quotations. Writing a newspaper: 50 minutes Each team was given a flipchart paper, scissors, Romanian and English magazines, glue and markers. With the help of the teachers, they had to invent funny articles, use the cut out pictures from the magazines given, and to produce the first page of a newspaper. Buying the newspapers: 10 minutes The special guest from England - David Speight- had to decide which newspaper to buy. The children were given a feed back of their work. Each newspaper was carefully analysed: good points and weak points were explained, then he bought a newspaper. That newspaper won the first prize. Dialogue with a native English speaker: 25 minutes The students had to ask as many questions as possible regarding media in England. David Speight answered all the questions and then the conversation changed topic. We discussed about London symbols, weather, drinking tea, reading, trains, jobs, life in England compared to life in Romania, culture and civilisation in general. Ending the workshop: 5 minutes The students were thanked for participating to the workshop and were given diplomas.
