<div id="StoryPageText">EAST ST. LOUIS -- Southern Illinois
University President Glenn Poshard called allegations of political clout being
involved with acceptance at the University of Illinois an “unfortunate
incident” but said it shouldn’t diminish public perception of
Illinois’ higher education system.<BR /><BR />Gov. Pat Quinn has formed a
commission to investigate allegations raised by The Chicago Tribune that a number
of subpar applicants were admitted to the university after involvement by
politicians and university trustees. About 800 students had landed on this
“clout list” in the past five years, the Tribune reported.<BR /><BR
/>“I don’t think it creates a problem for higher education as a
whole,” Poshard said, speaking after an SIU Board of Trustees meeting.
“These are very difficult situations for universities.”<BR /><BR
/>Poshard explained that SIU’s policy when it receives an inquiry from a
legitimate outside source is to tell the person that officials cannot make
recommendations for acceptance but they can ascertain a status report of the
student’s application process. If the student is not accepted, they will be
invited to speak with university counselors about how to have better chances on a
second attempt, he said.<BR /><BR />“That’s been our policy forever,
and that’s the way we’ll carry it forward,” Poshard said, noting
issues like this would primarily relate to SIU’s professional degree
programs including the medical school and law school, rather than undergraduate
studies.<BR /><BR /> </div>

investigation of U of I Clout List?<br /><br />1. Madigan and politicians won't
get in trouble.<br /><br />2. President and co-schemers at U of I won't get in
trouble.<br /><br />3. The 800 cheaters will be awarded with degrees. (Was there
any grade changing going on?)<br /><br />How about this:<br /><br />1. Kick out
the Category I students and revoke the degrees of those who have already
graduated. They never legally entered the university. Cheaters don't deserve
degrees. (Sorry Poshard.) The next time someone thinks about cheating the system,
it will make more sense to legally enter a university so you can keep your
degree.<br /><br />2. Fire the U of I president and co-schemers for not
performing the duties of their jobs. (You don't work for Madigan. You work for
the taxpayers of Illinois.)<br /><br />3. 6 1/2 year sentences are too light for

"unfortunate incidents". And why are they "unfortunate",
according to Mr. Poshard? It is because public somehow got a wind of what's going
on? Indeed, "unfortunate". Public is supposed to pay ever-increasing
taxes and tuition to fund grandiose projects and obscene salaries of university
"leaders", but otherwise it is supposed to keep quiet.<br /><br />It
seems that Mr. Poshard, a person at the center of "unfortunate
incidents" at SIUC (his plagiarized dissertation, his suspicious financial
dealings, etc.), sympathizes with busted cheaters at the University of
Illinois.<br /><br />I, as a taxpayer and a tuition payer, do not. Politicians
have no place in insitutions of higher education. I hope that University of
Illinois trustees and officers invoved in this scandal will be ousted out. Same
