AN INTRODUCTORY HISTORY

Now in its fourth year, the breakfast has gained a unique standing in Tasmania as government,
business and community leaders together express their thanks to God for the past and ask his
blessing on the future. It is a time of prayer for our community, our leaders, our state and the
nation.
The aim of the breakfast is to bring a message of hope to leaders of goodwill from across
Tasmania.
Patrons for the event are the Honourable David Llewellyn MHA, and the Honourable Rene
Hidding MHA. May other parliamentarians such as Will Hodgman MHA, leader of the
Opposition, and Michael Polley MHA, speaker of the House, are regular attendees, so too are
many Mayors and business, church and community leaders. The event is held at the Hotel
Grand Chancellor on the Hobart waterfront and attracts around 250 people.
Guest speakers have included Mr Jim Wallace from the Australian Christian Lobby and Mr
George Savvides, Managing Director of Medibank Private. This year Professor Ian Harper,
Chairman of the Australian Fair Pay Commission and Senior Consultant with Access
Economics will be our guest.
The breakfast is part of the Awakening movement and the unique moment in 1988 when a
collaboration of senior Christian parliamentarians, heads of churches, respected Christian
indigenous leaders and other community leaders linked arms with 50,000 others at the
National Prayer Gathering in Canberra. Broadly acknowledged by many Christian leaders
and statesmen as a seminal event for the church and the nation, the National Prayer
Gathering was the birth place of the Awakening movement – a nation-wide grass roots
development which has connected with one in five Australians.
The Awakening movement works with all God’s people and others of good will across each
region and the state. It works to bring together, in each discrete socio-geographic
community, a committed group who will work to release their region’s God given resources
to care for and serve their people. It hopes as a result that everyone from the youngest to
oldest will feel invited to find their role in God’s local and global purpose.
