MANE-4030: Elements of Mechanical Design: Worksheet #3

1/31/11: Wear A polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE or Teflon) slider is in contact with high-carbon steel. The normal load carried by the slider is 50 kN. The Archard adhesive wear constant for PTFE on high-carbon steel is k = 2.7 105 , and the yield strength of PTFE is S yp = 15 MPa. If the maximum allowable Teflon layer to be worn away in a sliding distance of 1,000 m is 4 mm, what minimum required contact area must be specified for the slider?

area to avoid an (a) Use Archards equation to determine the minimum required contact excessive wear depth for a sliding distance of 1,000 m.
(b) Make sure that the contact area found in part (a) is sufficient so that the mean nominal contact pressure does not exceed yield. If it does, then the yield strength is the limiting factor. Find the minimum required contact area so that the contact pressure does not exceed yield. (c) For the contact area found in part (b) (based on yield strength), determine the wear depth for the 1,000 m sliding distance. Also find the sliding distance that can be attained for this contact area before 4 mm is worn.

EMD worksheet solutions #3

Jan. 31, 2011 (a) For a maximum wear depth of 4 mm at a sliding distance of 1,000 m, Archards equation gives 0.004 m dadh = kW Ls (2.7 105 )(50, 000 N )(1, 000 m) = 9Syp Aa (9)(15 106 N/m2 )Aa

Solving for the minimum apparent contact area required Aa 0.0025 m2 = 2500 mm2 . (b) The mean nominal contact pressure for the area found in part (a) is pm = W 50, 000 N = 20 M P a > Syp = 15 M P a = Aa 2500 mm2

So the contact pressure for the minimum area found in part (a) would exceed yield, which is not acceptable. The minimum required contact area to avoid yield is then found from pm = 50, 000 N Syp = 15 M P a Aa

thus, Aa 3, 334 mm2 . (c) Letting Aa = 3, 334 mm2 = 0.003334 m2 , the wear depth at a sliding distance of 1,000 m would be (2.7 105 )(50, 000 N )(1, 000 m) = 0.003 m = 3 mm dadh = (9)(15 106 N/m2 )(0.003334 m2 ) and the sliding distance at which the wear depth would reach 4 mm would be dadh = 0.004 m = thus, Ls = 1, 334 m. (2.7 105 )(50, 000 N )Ls (9)(15 106 N/m2 )(0.003334 m2 )
