Hiccups

Hiccups are a condition in which gas (stomach qi) is automatically squeezed out of
the throat by diaphragm spasms.

Differential diagnosis: Patients with cold pathogens in the stomach may suffer from
slow hiccups, discomfort of upper abdomen relieved by heat and exacerbated by cold,
reduction of appetite, no thirst, pale tongue with white and moist coating, and slow
and moderate pulse. Patients with heat pathogens in the stomach may suffer from
quick hiccups, foul breath, preference for cold drinks, flushed face, red tongue with
yellow coating, and rolling and rapid pulse. Patients with qi stagnation may suffer
from hiccups induced by mental depression or anger, fullness and distension of chest
and flank, vertigo, pale tongue with thin and greasy coating, and wiry and rolling
pulse. And patients with vital energy deficiency may suffer from hiccups, cold limbs,
reduction of appetite, weakness, pale tongue with white and thin coating, and thready
and weak pulse. Hiccups caused by gastrointestinal neurosis, gastritis, dilatation of
stomach, peptic ulcer of stomach, late stage of liver cirrhosis, cerebrovascular
diseases, uremia and severe infection recognized by modem medicine may be
treatedby the following methods.

Treatment:

Foot massage: The massage can be applied to coeliac plexus (20), parathyroid gland
(13), diaphragm (44), stomach (15), kidney (22) and duodenum (16) reflecting areas
(Fig. 49).
