This is a condition in which excretion of milk in nursing mothers is insufficient to
meet the demands of their babies.
Differential diagnosis: Mothers with deficiency of qi and blood may suffer from reduction or absence of milk excretion, no distending sensation in breasts, sallow complexion, dizziness, poor appetite, mental and physical fatigue, pale and puffy ,tongue with thin coating, and feeble and weak pulse. Mothers with liver qi stagnation may suffer from pain, distension and hotness in breasts, mental depression, chest distress, belching, thin and yellow tongue coating, and wiry pulse.
Treatment:
Foot massage: The massage is applied to lymph nodes (upper body, 39), pituitary gland (4), parathyroid gland (13), kidney (22), adrenal gland (21), chest (43), reproductive gland (36) and lymph nodes (chest, 41) reflecting areas (Fig. 89).
Foot acupuncture:
Meridianal acupoints: At Zulinqi (GB 41), Taichong (LR 3) and Diwuhui (GB 42) acupoints, a reinforcing acupuncture technique with moxibustion is applied to deficient type patients, and a reducing technique without moxibustion is applied to excessive type patients. The needles are retained for 15 to 20 minutes, and moxibustion is applied for 10 to 15 minutes.
