Nineteenth Sunday after Trinity (1882)

Matthew 9:1-8 Introduction on the basis of Psalm 13:6.1 Jesus is the gracious Lord who is so happy to help: 1. in every distress of the soul, a. the anguish of the paralytic - it was greater than the pain of the body; he was in severe temptations because of his sins, . spiritual temptations, for the heart yearns for comfort (it only hears the heavy thunder of the law), are a heavy burden that is not supported by their own powers, nor can it be passed on.2 . this distress, hidden to the human eye, is known to churn the heart3, b. Christ proves Himself in this distress as the gracious Lord who is so happy to help4, . what is this help (forgiveness), . why He was so happy to grant this help (grace), . how He helps (Word), . whom He helps (faith). Thus today. He is with us in His Gospel and the Holy Sacraments.5 c. therefore we should take our refuge in Him alone when we and our fellow Christians are in such (and other) spiritual needs.6 Give thanks and praise to Him alone for our salvation7; 2. in all needs of the body, a. Paralysis, like all disease and ailments of the body, is a fruit of sin, are great evils 8, . even dear children of God are sent all sorts of diseases, etc.9, . but to them it is a salutary cross - not the rod of wrath, but the rod of love.10 "Chastening with a measure."11 b. Jesus proves Himself to the paralytic as the gracious Lord who is so happy to help12,

. the help itself13, . why He has so happily helped? . how?14 c. therefore we should take our refuge in Him alone - in faithful prayer - for ourselves and for others15 and give Him alone the glory for health of the body.16 G.R.
