The MHA is currently in the midst of an exciting evolution.

Lots of new educational programming and outreach strategies are being developed, and we want make sure you are kept informed. In order to do this we will be producing a weekly online and email based newsletter briefing you on what is happening in your mental health community.

MHA 59th ANNUAL MEETING

The Mental Health Associmonday ation in Tompkins County has october rescheduled its 59th Annual 4 to 8:00 PM Meeting and Award Ceremo8 ny for Mon., Oct. 2n from 4 to p.m. at the Ithaca Holiday Inn on S. Cayuga St. Tickets will remain available for the discounted rate of $25. The meeting will feature the presentation Identifying and Helping the Bully and the Bullied, by CEO of Resiliency, Inc. Horatio Sanchez. In addition, author Dustin Warburton will be hosting a book signing of Dennis the Wild Bull, a childrens book co-authored by Hall of Fame basketball player Dennis Rodman. Warburton will be speaking at 4 p.m. Hors doeurves will be served from 5 to 6 p.m. and followed by a full buffet dinner at 6 p.m. Call Josephine at (607) 273-9250 to reserve your seat.

The MHA will be represented at the 31st Annual Downtown Apple Harvest Festival on Fri., Oct. 4th and Sat., Oct. 5th. Grab some by and stop by to say hello.

IN ITHACA
Aging Services Network Meeting
TheOctober 2013 Aging Services Network Meeting will take place on Friday, October 11, 2013 from 12-1, at theOffice for the Aging, Human Services Annex Building, 214 W. Martin Luther King Jr./State Street, Ithaca. Jacqui Benedict, Employment Counselor at Tompkins Workforce New York will be discussing issues and trends faced by mature workers, and services offered to mature workers through Workforce New York. Aging Services Network meetings are open to people who work in the field of aging and anyone who has an interest in the topic.

Service Member Care Training


The Institute for Disaster Mental Health at SUNY New Paltz will offer an intensive one-day training for mental health counselors, social workers, psychologists, and other professionals who want to learn to address the needs of service members and their families. The training, which will include sessions about military culture, military sexual assault, and the use of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, will be held at SUNY New Paltz on Friday, Oct. 11, 8:00 - 4:30. CE Credits will be available through CMI Education Institute. The $48 registration fee includes lunch, parking, and materials. Continuing Education credits will be available for an additional $19.99. Just Be Cause Opening


Monday October 30th, marked the grand opening of the Just Be Cause center, founded by Jerry Dietz in memory of his late wife. The Just Be Cause center is now home to five nonprofits: Woods Earth, Running to Places, Miras Movement, Friendship Donations Network (FDN) and Ithaca Public Education Initiative (IPEI). These offices are located in the former Ithaca Paint Co. building at 1013 W. State St.

Hospicare Drop-in Group


TONIGHT! As a part of the ongoing evening bereavement support groups, Hospicare will have a drop-in group this evening, October 2nd from 5:307:00p.m. This meeting is for those whose loss has occurred in the last 18 months. You do not need register to attend.

War Writers Campaign is a nonprofit organization that encourages veterans to write about their war experiences as a form of therapy. They are currently calling for submissions. If interested click here.

Medicare Rights Center Information


Things are always changing when it comes to healthcare and insurance plans. Its often difficult to keep up-to-date. Suicide Prevention App


The New York State Office of Mental Health has released a free app entitled Safety Plan, which is designed to provide individuals with an emergency plan and prevention resources for suicide crises. The app helps individuals identify suicide warning signs, create coping strategies, identify positive contacts and social settings to distract from the crisis, find professional help and resources, etc. To download the app click here.

WRAP App
WRAP stands for the Wellness and Recovery Action Plan. The idea is to identify what makes you well and then use personalized Wellness Tools to manage difficult emotions and maintain wellness. WRAP has have recently developed an app for iPhone and iPad available at the App Store.
