MOTHER
It is indispensable that each one nds his psychic and unites with it denitively. It is through the psychic that the supramental will manifest itself. 24 June 1972 To nd the psychic one must conquer the desires of the vital and silence the mind and then make a sincere submission to the Divine of whom the psychic is the instrument in man. The inner contact with the psychic is a concrete and undeniable fact which imposes itself on all sincere consciousness. 5 April 1972

a) To help the Matrimandir fulfill Mother's dream to become: "the cohesive force of Auroville" and "a place for trying to find one's consciousness". b) To bring harmony and unity in the day-to-day work at the MM. c) To respect the collective decisions taken by the Residents of Auroville. d) To communicate with and respond to the Residents of Auroville on a regular basis. e) To organize the work on the site, and implement the decisions taken by the Residents of Auroville. f) To make plans with regards the future of the MM. g) To involve more of the community in the work. New Proposals regarding MM Executive Selection The meeting made the following new proposals regarding the MM Executive Selection: a) Remove the entire team and bring in the previous Executive (Andy, Gilles, Divya, Michael T.) to operate for an interim period until a new executive can be chosen. Gilles and Michael were present at the meeting. Gilles stated that he would not even consider being an executive without the following questions being answered satisfactorily:
Report on the 2nd General Meeting on Matrimandir Executive Selection & Mandate
WHEN: 4.30 August 28th, 2013 WHERE: Unity Pavilion Agenda 1. Introduction 2. Presentation of proposals received regards Matrimandir Executive mandate 3. Discussion & suggestions 4. Presentation of proposals received regards Matrimandir Executive Selection Process 5. Discussion & suggestions 6. Summary of proposals Report After an introduction from the RAS, the meeting was presented with the proposals received on a possible Mandate for the Matrimandir (MM) Executive and proposals received on a selection process for the MM Executive. After brief discussion, the RAS presented the meeting with a synthesis of the proposals received. The discussion that followed arrived at the following: Consensus The meeting arrived at a general consensus on: a) The future Matrimandir Executive should be chosen from the Residents' Assembly by the Residents' Assembly. b) The Executives would have a five-year term with a review period halfway through its term (2.5 years). Proposal to rename Executives "Facilitators" or "Stewards" The proposal to rename the Executives "Facilitators" or "Stewards" was put forward during the first meeting (Aug 5), in some of the proposals received after that meeting and during this meeting (Aug 28). The RAS has received an objection to this proposal during the minutes feedback round. This feedback has expressed that "very real practical difficulties" exist when "dealing with the outside world in a management role without a recognized title like executive." Next Open Platform to discuss Matrimandir Executives' Mandate & Selection Process Following the meeting two organizers of the Open Platform proposed to focus their next meeting on the formation of a proposal to the RA on: a) The drafting of a Mandate for the Matrimandir Executives b) How to select the Matrimandir Executives from the RA The meeting would refer to the following synthesis of proposals received so far: Synthesis of MM Executive Mandate Proposals The proposed Mandate of the Matrimandir executive could include:
What is the scope of the work to be completed during the mandate? Who is producing designs and who is giving the goahead? Who are the other executives?
Michael said that he would only consider participation as an Executive when the scope of the work to be completed and the mandate were clear. b) Replace the entire team with a new team chosen by the RA. c) Create a team composed of members from the previous executive and the current executive. This proposal argues that the Executives must include people that have an understanding of the current and immediate challenges facing the Matrimandir and therefore must include members of the current team. It can be a group of 3 or more, whatever seems best. Make their term of office at least 5 years with the possibility of extension if the Residents feel they are doing a good job at the end of those 5 years. d) The present team remains in place until the Platform/RA has come up with a proposal for the mandate and selection process. e) Replace the Executive with Mira, Jyoti, Mauna, Janet, Jill as stewards and Renu & Fabienne as executives for a two-year trial period. Discussion The discussion on the above topics included the following: One speaker began by arguing that the MM Gardens development must consider three things: Design Function Execution Another speaker said that they felt that the current garden design had been imposed on the community and didn't have enough shade or trees. We must find a new way to draw or design the garden, they said. 3
One speaker called for the return of the previous Executive, Andy, Michael Tait, Divya and Gilles to step in as an interim group. They would be a good team because they did a good job before and they are doers, said this speaker. Another speaker observed that the current team had worked well together and now at the end of their term there were problems. Why was that? First three gardens & Feedback One participant explained that the present three gardens were presented to the residents five years ago through exhibition, presentations, radio and News & Notes and the community was asked for feedback. Another member said that they felt that the first three gardens were presented in a very un-open way. There were a couple of weeks and then it started and there was a difference between what was presented and what was implemented, said this speaker. "We are still waiting for an opportunity to give our feedback on the first three gardens" the speaker said. One member added by email after the meeting that the completion of the planting in Bliss garden (due in coming months) would create a pattern which could influence the next nine gardens. Others commented on the beauty in the work that has been done and expressed appreciation for it. "We should take care to move forward, experiment further, not focus on breaking down what has been done. Let's proceed with the other gardens, differently, more simply, but with an effort to harmonize with what is already there." It was proposed that as the gardens are evolutive and a garden grows and changes, let us see things completed and later consider it and see where to go. Resident - Garden Design Liaison Group Needed There is a need expressed for a group that guides and helps and advises on design and coordinates the relationship between the 'client' (the Residents) and the designer or design team (also Residents). Roger said that the Gardens would be evolutive, therefore the Gardens should use less concrete. The paths and benches are in concrete which many of us don't appreciate. Others said that they appreciated the stone benches and pathways. "I'm suffering from the lack of flow between the Matrimandir working group and the community as a whole" said one Resident. Flowers vs. Cement "Mother gave precise indications of the flowers that should be in the gardens. We have flowers now in the midst of lots of stones and concrete. It should be only flowers. That will make the gardens evolutive. We don't need architects; we need designers and mostly gardeners. We also need trees." "Before we discuss about the executives, we must establish the work to be done and who can do that work." A garden is not only flowers and trees - it should contains the five elements." Gap between the Dream and the RA There was a gap between the Dream and the RA, said one member of the meeting. The RA was the lowest common denominator, they felt. MM facilitators, the stewards must be driven by the dream as must the RA. Another speaker responded that since it was true we have no leader then that meant that we must do it together. We have to follow the dream, but "I have no idea what it means in term of
creating matter" that speaker said. We must first define what we want to do and how. Communication & participation is the key to Auroville and to everything. We have to trust ourselves. We are representing everything else. Technical Skills Needed One member argued that because MM designs were difficult in terms of maintenance, the team needed the following skills Technical Engineering Architectural Infrastructure expertise Invite the Community to Submit Designs A different speaker suggested that the community be invited to make proposals on design for the other gardens. Another member expressed concern that the last time that happened; everybody chose one garden, creating incoherent designs. This speaker expressed the need for coherence in the designs merged in an overview of the MM oval space. The Lake and the Island One speaker said that the only way to proceed with the lake was step by step. First, complete the twelve gardens, if we want them ready by 2018 (Auroville's Golden Jubilee on 28th February 2018) we would need to simplify the designs. One speaker argued that all major work on the Island should be complete by 2018. First we begin work on the bank of the island. The dimensions and design of the lake are undefined. Another speaker observed that the design work was in process in the other gardens, despite the confusion over the Executives. That speaker asked to know what was happening right now at MM with the Gardens and the Lake. On what basis is the work continuing in the remaining nine gardens if we didn't have feedback on the first three? Call to Join the MM Team One member of the MM team explained that the team kept asking people to join the team and none joined. To complete the action you have to join in, this member said. "If the gardens are not nice, as some say, that's because this is what we can do" said one speaker. More of Mother's children will come and make the gardens better, they said. Marc and Meera are calling people to ask them what their visions of the gardens are. Everyone is welcome to join the garden team, said this member. It's very simple. You just join in. It's all about change. Get the Green Experts Involved One person said that "we who stand for sustainability should ask our green experts to get involved as advisers in our gardens". The MM should make an official request to these people they said. Survey the People One member of the meeting proposed surveying the Residents on their thoughts and feelings regarding the gardens. We Need Knowledgeable, Not Power-Hungry People One person said that we needed knowledgeable people at MM, not power hungry people. If we all commit to peace, then we can go forward together. I think it is really important to determine what the cause is. The highest incidence of osteoporosis occurs in the countries with the highest dairy consumption. So taking more dairy is not the answer. Cow's milk has 120 mg of calcium per 100 gms, but sesame has 1160 mgs per 100 gms but it is rarely mentioned. All green leafy vegetables, nuts and seeds are high in calcium. Most of the diets in Auroville are not calcium deficient so why the osteoporosis? 1. It could be because of acidic diets. Tea, coffee, colas, sugar, salt, alcohol, preserved foods and all high protein foods, especially animal protein foods, including dairy (and curds) are highly acid yeilding in the body. Since our bodies are alkaline, calcium is leached out of the bones to neutralise the acid when we consume acid foods. Despite taking in enough we lose a lot this way. Ever noticed how people with osteoporosis rarely become well despite taking all those calcium tablets and dairy? 2. It could be because of low vitamin D. This is becoming common all over India. The best source of vitamin D is direct sunlight on the skin and we surely have a lot of it, but if we don't spend enough time in the sun or cover ourselves with clothes or sunblocks or even bathe too frequently and not allow the vitamin D to form on the skin, we can end up with low vitamin D. Darker skin takes longer to absorb vitamin D and some people say that the radiation from mobile phone towers and mobile phones also is a deterrent to the absorption. 3. Lack of exercise exercise helps build bone density. 4. What can you do? Don't get disturbed. It could be that those tests are not that accurate. But make sure that your bones are healthy by making sure that you get plenty of sunlight, green leafy vegetables, nuts and seeds and exercise. Healthy teeth and nails can also be an indicator of bone health. Nandita, Quiet
About Osteoporosis
If you recently went for the bone density tests and were diagnosed with osteoporosis, you may be sad or worried. And rightly so. So what should we do? I heard some people say that they had taken the calcium prescribed the last time and this time it was even worse.

Accessible Auroville
I so appreciated the detailed article in N&N Aug. 17th sent in by "Accessible Auroville". I often forget how blessed I am that I can move around in the world as I please at my own pace. I have had times when I could not because of an injury but how fast I forgot that, forgetting that I had a hard time to get in somewhere or really could not. It may just take reminding ourselves that a friend can't see, or is in a wheelchair or is on crutches for a while. And women with babies on their hips and in their arms with shopping bags trying to get on buses! Dare I say we are all getting older and like to sit down on a handy bench!? Thanks to Susmita and Alex for the reminder. Love, Audrey

Phoenix
A humming bird perching on a flower fluttering its wings away (Dr. Jayalakshmi Rajesh, a consultant paediatrician, Losing the Paradise to Concrete Jungle, The Hindu, 18 Aug. 2013, p. 10). In the ancient Rome the citizen said: Errare humanum est the ability of error is in the human nature. The hummingbirds live in Central America, not in India. Some Aurovilians are sure that colibris live in our city. It is a mistake too: in France, Germany and Russia they use the name colibri for hummingbirds. Fauzia S.Arief from Bangalore (she was born in Kerala) lived in the Aspiration Guest House 14-17 Aug. She works in Karnataka with computers and her hobby is bird watching. Fauzia has nice binoculars and she created a list of 22 bird species for Aspiration community and 28 for Auroville as a whole. Among the birds of Aspiration she named Lotene sunbird and Purple sunbird. They are similar to hummingbirds (colibris) and eat nectar, insects and spiders. Sunbirds are very common in Auroville because we have a lot of flowers in our city. Of course sunbirds were rare in the semi-desert landscape before Auroville was created. About 300 years ago there was a jungle in this place and many birds were happy to live here. Now after the resurrection of a rich ecosystem Auroville has become a Phoenix of nature among the poor surrounding landscape. There is a small palm in the city with the botanical name of Phoenix. Its fruits are edible but havent any commercial significance. In Egypt a relative palm exists and also goes by the Latin name of Phoenix, it gives dates. Mankind lives generally in a technocratic world with numerous monsters cellphones, computers, motorbikes, cars etcBut there is also the other world of the living nature. Step by step more and more people forget about plants and animals. Very soon the human beings will lose their humanity, new born babies will receive a personal computer instead of its mothers breasts. It will be a nightmare indeed. If I think about it, I remember also about Phoenix-Auroville and the Phoenix palms in it. It is the bright light at the end of the dark tunnel. Goplal Reni Singh (Shambala)
Auroville lands
Aurovilians should watch Shyama's beautiful filmed interview (which will be reprogrammed again soon) to understand how SACRED is the land of Auroville. ALL the land, not just the one within the City. It seems to some of us that there is an intense pressure on Auroville at the moment (hence the heaviness and uneasiness which many have felt recently) to reconsider the future of the whole master Plan and the way we envision the City. Some of us feel too that selling the outlying lands which were so painstakingly bought by the Mother through the Society, when She had very little money, but knew very well what She was doing, is foolhardy at best and irresponsible at worst. The Divine, when He or She incarnates upon this earth, lives from moment to moment and His or Her decisions are influenced by the conditions of their time. Would the Mother say the same thing today, given the way Auroville has grown organically, the water problems, the changes in environment, and the new trends in construction that we can see today in the West? Maybe we should start by defusing the whole conflict: Those who think that the City as envisioned by the Master Plan is the only way, should accept that maybe there is another one / Those who think the opposite, and refuse to budge from communities or parts outside the City, should consider that maybe the City is what the Divine wants. In this frame of OPEN mind, all of us could meet together under the banyan tree and silently ask the question to the Mother & Sri Aurobindo, in an aspiration to have an answer...And then leave, as silently. Maybe the answer would come to some of us, silently or outwardly, later, and the way will become clear. Again watch Shyamas film and you will understand that these questions are answered. My Newcomer Week
Several Aurovilian friends came up to me. Oh, I hear you participated in the Newcomer program! Yes, I did. Why? As one of the older Aurovilians (having first arrived in 1975) I am contented and not yet disenchanted with my life and work in Auroville. But for some time I also vaguely sensed it might be high time to get in touch with another Auroville, whatever that might be. When one of the Newcomer program facilitators asked me if I would be interested to join in, I said yes, to the surprise of myself and the others who were part of the conversation. Allowing myself to be jolted out of my comfortable circle/routine for a week and joining a 7-day tour of Auroville along with 18 other people (four facilitators and 14 Newcomers) seemed a good start. The first day was exhausting. I missed my after-lunch rest! That morning we sat in a large circle introducing ourselves to each other, guided by the facilitators. There were a number of familiar faces and a bigger number of faces new to me. Then we broke up in smaller groups for further exploration - visualizing what we saw as our next step in Auroville and expressing this on a sheet of blank paper. This exercise was to be repeated on the last morning. As the week went on, my energy became better it was as if I subtly began to be carried by the group itself. There were group exercises and games and visits to places where long-time Aurovilians presented their work and talked freely about how they personally discovered Auroville. The questions from the group were intelligent and to the point. I began to gradually feel that each and every one in the group had come here not by chance, but had been guided here and had gone through a certain inner preparation. At the end I couldn't help feeling that this group must be an exceptional group. And while I have not yet said anything about the facilitators, it is because in the end I felt no distinction between facilitators and the facilitated. Such was their skill. During our final feedback session, a number of participants expressed their appreciation that I, an old Aurovilian, had participated. It was expressed in such a way that I began to feel slightly ashamed. It obviously meant a lot that an Aurovilian bothered to get to know the newcomers. I was asked to convey to other Aurovilians that they will be welcome to take part in the Newcomer program. For me it was a unique experience. I definitely risk sounding pompous when I say that I sensed the very subtle emergence of a group soul this past week. And this feels like an answer to an ancient almost forgotten longing that came unexpectedly. Just the other day I came across an old paper, written in 1972 by Ruud Lohman and called The Sadhana of the Group Soul . A message? Annemarie

Directed by Claude BERRY, France, 1986 / With: Yves Montand, Emmanuelle Bart, Daniel Auteuil Synopsis: Second part of this film adaptation of a superb novel by Marcel Pagnol (Acadmie Franaise). Manon has grown into a beautiful young shepherdess living in the Provencal countryside. She is determined to uncover the truth behind the death of her father (played by Grard Depardieu in Jean de Florette) and to wreak vengeance on the men she holds responsible. Ugolin (Daniel Auteil) falls in love with Manon, but this does not weaken her resolve. She causes the village's water supply to diminish, blaming this action upon Ugolin and his duplicitous coconspirator Cesar (Yves Montand).
