Week of 10/7/13
Our top readers for September were Konus Berkman with 3,265 minutes, Madeline Duke with 2,580 minutes, Elizabeth Schwartz with 2,230 minutes and Bobby Rodolakis with 2,226 minutes. As a class, we read 24,572 minutes in September. Way to go everyone! I am encouraging all of your children to read an additional 100 minutes this month. That is only 25 minutes more a week.

Quote of the Week

10/9 Emily D

Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day

ELA We will begin to look at how asking questions as we read helps us to increase our comprehension. In writing, we will continue to focus on creating powerful narrative openings. In small groups and individually, we will construct openings based on our favorite fall activity. Read Aloud We are reading one of my favorite books, A Week in The Woods by Andrew Clements. Mark initially has no interest in making friends at his new school in Whitson, N.H., where his constantly traveling parents have just renovated and enlarged a 1798 farmhouse. His science teacher, Mr. Maxwell, passes judgment on Mark before the boy finally decides to give the school a chance. Mr. Maxwell organizes a week in a wooded state park for the students and then the adventure begins.

Math We will continue with Unit 3. Students need to practice math facts nightly. Please visit www.everydaymathonline.com as often as possible Social Studies We are now masters of mapping skills and are on our way to learn more about the physical features (ie. specific landforms and water sources) and natural resources (ie. water, trees, minerals, soil) of our great country. Science We completed our scratch test and found Quartz to be the hardest commonly found mineral. We will go on a Calcite Quest next to find out which rocks contain Calcite by placing them in vinegar and closely observing the reaction. Our final experiment will be to determine the minerals found in Granite.
