Vibration absorber and its applications?

What is vibration absorber?

A vibration absorber is a spring mass system (

can consist of even a damper) which is treated as an auxiliary system which is attached to the primary system so as to absorb the vibrations caused in the system
Therfore,the function of a vibration absorber is

make the amplitude of vibration zero or very small so does disturbance is reduced

Causes of vibration
Some common causes are: Due to unbalanced mass present in the system This may be due to misalignment in while mounting rotary components, for ex. Mounting of turbine rotor with the motor.
Misalignment during various couplings, for ex. During

coupling of shafts with flanges.

Looseness

looseness of joints while fixing operation.

Due to wear

Applications of vibration absorber

For reducing structural vibrations caused by

machines rotating at high rpm. Installed in the suction and discharge lines of air conditioning and refrigeration systems to dampen the transmission of compressor-induced vibration through system piping. Even used in water pipe applications. Vehicle wheel vibration.

Literature Review

Consider the spring mass system as shown,

m2 & k2 are the mass and stiffness of the auxiliary system and m1 and k1 are the mass and stiffness of the primary system. Let the forcing function which is applied on the primary mass m1 be of the form Focos(wt). Equations of motion are : m1 (dx2/dt2) + k1x1 + k2(x1-x2) = Focos(wt)

m2x2 + k2(x2-x1) = 0 Substituting the solution as x1=X1cos(wt) and x2=X2cos(wt) and on solving we get,

X1 = F0(k2 m2w) / ( (k1 + k2 m1w)(k2 m2w) k2 2) ) X2 = F0k2 / ((k1 + k2 m1w)(k2-m2w) k22) )

Therefore for the amplitude of vibration to be zero, the frequency of the forcing function should be w, should be equal to (k2/m2)1/2

Variation of amplitudes with forcing frequency

Conditions of design of vibration absorber

For eliminating the vibrations at resonant frequency,

the tuned mass damper must be designed such that:

o w2= w1= (k1/m1)=(k2/m2)

Also, if the primary system works in the region

between w1-w2( i.e. w1< w >w2), then the separation between this region should be quite large so as to eliminate the condition of vibration at resonating frequency. The rattle space that is provided should be twice the amplitude of vibration of tuned mass damper.
o i.e. X2= Rattle Space / 2

Forced Response of damped vibration due to rotation imbalance

K C

F=F0Sin(wt)

Motors are not perfectly balanced and create initially-

induced sinusoidal forcing functions.

F=F0 sin(wt), F0=mew2

The general equation of this setup is given as M(dx2/dt2) + C(dx/dt) + kx = mew2. Sin(wt) Therefore, the system response is given by, X= (emr2 / M ) / ( (1-r2)2 + ( 2Er)2 ) 1/2

Force Transmissibility
Any machine with rotating masses transmits forces to

its foundation. The more this transmitted force, the more shaking is felt through the floor which can be annoying or adversely affect other precision machines The force transmitted to the ground is the summation of the spring force and the force through dashpot. Force Transmissibility is the ratio of the transmitted force to the induced force: Force transmitted to the foundation = KX + CX Force Transmissibility : TR = FT/ Fo = (1+ (2Er)2) / ((1-r2) + (2Er)2 ) where r = w/wn
