Marks: 30 Time: 60 Minutes Date: 21. 03. 2006 Answer All The Questions: 1. State the laws of friction. 3 2. What do you mean by co-efficient of static friction and angle of friction? 3 3. Give some advantages of friction. 2 4. Explain the terms Elastic limit, rigidity modulus and Poissons ratio. 3 5. Sketch the stress-Strain diagram and explain briefly. 4 6. Prove the relation Y = 3B + , where symbols have their usual meanings. 2 7. Derive an expression for the time period of torsional oscillations. 4 Or Show that in the case of longitudinal strain, the energy of a strained body is half the product of stress and strain. 8. The Young modulus of a metal is 21011 N/m2 and its breaking stress is 1.078109 N/m2. Calculate the maximum amount of energy per unit volume which can be stored in the metal when stretched. 3 9. A uniform metal disc of diameter 0.1m and mass 1.2Kg is fixed symmetrically to the lower end of the torsional wire (length 1m and diameter 1.4410-3m), the upper end of which is fixed. The time period of the torsional oscillation is 1.98sec. Calculate the modulus of rigidity of the material of the wire. 3
