Section 1 Assessment 1a. A larger cell is less efficient in moving nutrients and waste materials across the cell membrane. DNA does not grow as the cell grows, so there might be an information overload. 1b. The surface area does not increase as fast as the volume increases. The ratio becomes less the greater the volume and surface area . 1c. A cells surface area and volume ratio are important because a decrease in the relative amount of cell membrane available can create some serious problems. 2a. Asexual reproduction is the production of genetically identical offspring from a single parent. Sexual reproduction is involves two separate parent cells. 2b. Humans and animals reproduce sexually. 2c. The advantage of asexual reproduction is that it only requires one parent and makes an exact copy of the parent. The disadvantage of asexual reproduction is that there would be little to no evolution because all the offspring would be very alike. The advantages to sexual reproduction is that it gets genetic material from both its parents, making it diverse. The disadvantages are that it takes two parents and it takes a much longer time than asexual reproduction. 3a. 3b. I believe the baseball would have a larger ratio of area of cell membrane to cell volume.
