Module Two Writing Assignment ELED 300 51E Morgan Sprouse

Sprouse 2 Reading throughout the textbook Learning & Teaching Research-Based Methods by: Don Kauchak; I have developed a deeper understanding for several important concepts teaching entails. Competencies 3, 4, and 8 along with chapters 4, 5, and 6 directly correlate with one another. Each competency and chapter has different information, yet together they all focus on the common denominator of teaching a lesson. From the planning to the execution of teaching the lesson each step is as equally crucial to students understanding. I believe the most important concepts that are highlighted within the selected competencies and chapters are: incorporating diversity, engaging students in learning, and teacher preparation. Incorporating diversity is extremely important in the classroom. Each student in a classroom is diverse in not only they way they learn, but in their family culture as well. As teachers we can accommodate both academic and cultural diversity by incorporating activities that include multiple cultures, and creating assignments that have modifications for students with learning exceptionalities. Teaching with the understanding of diversity will allow designing effective instruction and assessment of students to be appropriate while helping both the teacher and student to meet their learning goals and objectives. Engaging students in their learning is huge within the classroom. A teacher can plan for hours on end and develop a great lesson, but without engaging students into the lesson all of that planning is pointless. Students become more motivated to learn when teachers involve them in their learning. Creating a clear idea of what we want our students to take away from the lesson is key in creating an engaging learning experience. After we have developed a clear take away, we can execute the task of engaging students by: showing examples, having classroom demonstrations, and allowing students to incorporate their own interests into the lesson.

Sprouse 3 Last but not least teacher preparation is also important in the classroom. Teachers who put time into planning are able to effectively meet the learning needs of each student in the classroom as well as create appropriate learning goals for students to achieve. Effective classroom planning starts with developing your Philosophical position, feeling a personal sense of mission that all students can learn. Secondly focus on self motivation, your learners, and setting aside a time schedule are all as equally important. Each teacher is different and will incorporate each of the important learning topics discussed above in a unique way. Incorporating diversity, engaging students, and teacher preparation are all equally important. Mastering each of these topics allows teachers to create a healthy classroom community.
