SENATOR MITCH FIFIELD

ASSISTANT MINISTER FOR SOCIAL SERVICES MANAGER OF GOVERNMENT BUSINESS IN THE SENATE SENATOR FOR VICTORIA

MEDIA RELEASE
9 October 2013

CARERS WEEK 2013

Assistant Minister for Social Services, Senator Mitch Fifield, and Carers Australia today turned the spotlight on Carers Week 2013, which starts on 13 October. At an event with carers at Parliament House in Canberra, Senator Fifield said Carers Week is an opportunity to recognise the tireless work of Australias carers. This years theme, Be Care Aware, highlights the importance of raising awareness of carers in our community, Senator Fifield said. In every workplace, social setting, community organisation or sporting group, there is an individual who represents the 2.6 million family carers in Australia. To celebrate Carers Week there are events being held across the country, including Take a Break for carers morning teas, fundraisers and workshops. Take a break events increase the awareness of carers and help decrease isolation often experienced by carers. I encourage everyone to take part in some of the wonderful events that are being held across the country this week. We know that most Australians will be a carer, know a carer or be cared for at some time in their lives. The Australian Government recognises how important the role of carers is in the lives of many Australians. Carers Australia also launched a series of television advertisements today that tell the stories of a range of carers.
